Ron Paul Wins CPAC Straw Poll

This is impressive. Reportedly there were over 10,000 people at the conference. Further, the conference was not put on by libertarian organization. CPAC is an American Conservative Union event and the conference speakers were from across the conservative political spectrum and included, Glenn Beck, John Ashcroft, George Will, Mitt Romney and Dick Cheney. Yet, when it came time for the straw vote, Ron Paul blew them all away.

Here are the results of the poll:

Ron Paul 31%
Mitt Romney 22%
Sarah Palin 7%
Tim Pawlenty 6%
Mike Pence 5%
Newt Gingrich 4%
Mike Huckabee 4%
Mitch Daniels 2%
John Thune 2%
Rick Santorum 2%
Haley Barbour 1%

  1. For the first time in years I might listen to Beck just to see if he says anything about this.

    Probably won't.

  2. Isn't it funny how Fox bashed Obama's inexperience and now goes so far as to pay Palin for her time? Meanwhile they ignore Ron Paul who's the most experienced on this straw poll and he's been consistent with his message all this time.

I disagree with Ron Paul on many issues and disagree strongly with many of his anarchist supporters, but he's the only candidate there who understands sound monetary policy (Fed) and sustainable fiscal policy. He's the strongest on protecting individual liberties as well, but as long as the influential "conservative" outlets such as Fox News and Free Republic silence Ron Paul supporters, he'll never gain the traction necessary to carry the Republican party. Those groups would rather have FDR or Lenin than Ron Paul.

  3. libertarians should enjoy this while it lasts. If history is any guide this burst of libertarian feeling will fade away quickly.

It swelled up in the 1980's with reagan and again in 1994 when the repubs flashed the ill-fated contract with america. But government growth barely slowed and is bigger now than ever.

This libertarian bubble at CPAC too will pass. But the failures will continue until we stop voting.
