War of the Sexes in Bella Italia

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been ordered to stand trial on charges he paid for sex with a 17-year-old girl and abused his power. Eric Margolis thumbs to explain what he is up against:

Italy's PM Berlusconi faces female lynch mob, three vinegar-faced female judges. War of the sexes in bella Italia.

  1. the systematic telephone interception of thousands of people by a staff of over 1000 police and juduciary personnel led to the following conclusion: if you invite a girl to a party attended by dozens of politicians, showbiz people and public figures, and your name is berlusconi, a court will send you to trial without further proof needed for the crime of instigation to prostitution.

  2. There's a simple explanation as to why Berlusconi bailed out the girl after she was arrested for prostitution: he thought she was the niece of the wisest man in the Middle East.

"The judge’s ruling ordering a trial came weeks after prosecutors said they were investigating the prime minister on charges that he paid Ms. Mahroug for sex before she turned 18 and abused his office in calling the police to intervene when she was detained in May for theft.

Mr. Berlusconi has said he called the police to avoid “an international diplomatic incident” because he had been told that the Moroccan-born Ms. Mahroug was the niece of Hosni Mubarak, then the president of Egypt."

"Western leaders want a “more democratic system without ruptures with a president like Mubarak that all the Western hemisphere, including the U.S., had considered the wisest man and a reference point in all of the Middle East,” Berlusconi said on arriving at a meeting of European Union leaders in Brussels today."
