U.S. Treasury Adds Qadhafi's Wife and Sons to Asset Freeze List

The United States government took another step in meddling in the internal affairs of another nation by announcing further asset freezes of those connected to the Libyan government.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury took additional steps today to increase pressure on Muammar Qadhafi and the Government of Libya by designating nine individuals pursuant to Executive Order 13566. Those designated today include senior officials of the Government of Libya, as well as the wife and several of the children of Muammar Qadhafi.

President Obama signed E.O. 13566 on February 25, 2011, freezing the assets of the Qadhafi regime. To date, the United States has frozen more than $32 billion in Government of Libya assets. As a result of today’s action, any assets of the designees subject to U.S. jurisdiction are frozen, and U.S. persons are prohibited from engaging in business with them.

The senior officials designated today include Abu Bakr Yunis Jabir, the Libyan Minister of Defense; Matuq Mohammad Matuq, Secretary General of the People’s Committee for Public Works; Abu Zayd Umar Dorda, the Director of Libya’s External Security Organization; and Abdullah Al-Senussi, the Director of Military Intelligence.

Treasury also designated today Safia Farkash, Muammar Qadhafi’s wife, and several of Muammar Qadhafi’s children: Hannibal Qadhafi, head of the General Maritime Transport Company of Libya; Saadi Qadhafi, Commander of Special Forces and Head of the Libyan Football Federation; Muhammad Qadhafi, Chairman of the Libyan Olympic Committee and Chairman of the General Post and Telecommunications Company; and Saif Al-Arab Qadhafi.
