What Will Happen if the Debt Ceiling is not Raised by August 2

WSJ explains:
[The President] and Mr. Geithner will gradually shut down government services, the more painful the better. The polls that now find that voters oppose a debt-limit increase will turn on a dime when Americans start learning that they won't get Social Security checks. Republicans will then run like they're fleeing the Pamplona bulls, and chaotic retreats are the ugliest kind. By then they might end up having to vote for a debt-limit increase and a tax increase.

  1. I wonder if this is a sign that the White House thinks they've got 2012 locked up.

  2. And republicans voting for a tax increase and a debt ceiling increase would be a good thing? Pathetic

  3. Who's going to go after Obama and the rest of Congress for setting up the false choice of either making debt payments or Social Security payments? That's like saying I'll cut food from the budget if I can't borrow more money to pay for my expensive drug habit.

  4. This article will shed some light on the debt-ceiling issue. It's very good and includes a balanced budget proposal based on spending ONLY the revenue coming in without deficit spending:

  5. The Republicans must be capable of withstanding media attacks like those offered in Wisconsin earlier this year. I doubt they can. All the old milkshakes will be screaming for their social security bottles.

Any person younger than 40 who isn't voting for people interested only in cutting government spending is a fool.

  7. BS The government can pay their bills and quit spending. If Obama and Geithner decide not to pay social security then it is on their heads, not the Republicans. But I am sure the lame stream media will spin it so the Republicans look bad. The Republicans need to get some backbone!

Nary a peep about having their children taking them in, or charity filling the gap, or mom and dad downsizing a bit and moving in with other couples their age to combine resources?
