Poll: Cain in First with 20 Point Lead

A Zogby poll released Thursday shows Herman Cain leading the Republican field, topping former front-runner Mitt Romney by 20 points. Cain would also narrowly edge out Obama in a general election, the poll found, by a 46 to 44 margin.

The poll found that 38 percent of Republican primary voters said they would vote for Cain if the primary were held today. Eighteen percent said they would would vote for Romney, while 12 percent each said they would vote for Perry and Ron Paul. No other candidate attracted double-digit support.

  1. The more I listen to Cain, the more I beleive he will be the nominee and quite possibly the next President. He has a Reaganesque like quality to him that seems to resonate with voters desperate for leadership (or at least the appearance of leadership). Had uninspiring, boring, economically challenged Carter not been President when Reagan ran, its doubtful Reagan would have ever been elected President. Cain could benefit in much the same way.

What is ironic is that Obama has studied Reagan and his leadership style profusely to the point of an obsession and like a typical book smart/street stupid kid, he can't figure out how to pull it off. So now he may get to run against a guy that has the Reagan like qualities he so desperately wants himself.

Of course my choice will remain with Paul to the end, as he is the only genuine one in the bunch. Sadly, I think his message requires more critical thinking then the average voter is capable of to move from where they are today to where Paul is. But, even so, Paul as certainly pushed libertarian thinking, out of the fringe and into the mainstream, and that alone may be his biggest legacy.

  2. Something is not right here. How does Cain shoot up so fast in such a small amount of time? It seems to me that this is staged for some reason. Originally, when I saw that he won Florida, my though was that it was all a plan to drop Paul out of the top 3.

The voting population (and the king makers) are trying out different candidates. Give it a month, Cain will bottom out just like Perry. These candidates are merely a flash in the pan.

The way I look at it, many folks know in their gut that Ron Paul is the dude for the Republican party. But they need to see if the GOP establishment can produce a credible candidate in the meantime. I don't believe they will. I think (and hope) the party nomination narrows to Romney and Paul. Because then it will become apparent to all it should be Ron Paul. We shall see.

  5. I agree. Cain will burn out just like Bachmann and Perry. Give it time. There's a lot of road to travel before we get to crunch time.

Must be some HFT machines at Goldman Sachs being re-tasked to front run polls and skew the results.

  6. Anon@758PM-

I hope you're right, and I suspect you may be onto something. The Republican Elite is desperate for someone- ANYONE- that can excite the base...except Dr Paul.

They know Romney is too slick, too Mormon, too socialist. Bachmann has fizzled, Perry is an idiot, Palin and Christie are out, and Cain is their last hope. It's getting late in the game, and if he falters, then people will start to look at Dr Paul. Many of the Republican faithful will have to reject their militaristic, interventionist, fundamentalist mindset, but once they start to see through the media created characterization of Paul as a "loony old man" they MIGHT begin to see the common-sense wisdom and dignity he brings to the party.

When...IF...that happens (and GOD I hope it does) then the game is over- 0bama is toast, and the "Beltway Republican Country Club" is bankrupt. They will try (even if he wins the nomination) to sabotage him, but I suspect they will fail.
