HOT Juan Williams: Ron Paul Could Be the Biggest, Most Consequential Third Party Candidacy in American History

Juan Williams examines the possibility of Ron Paul running for president as a third party candidate and concludes that such a run could be " the most the biggest, most consequential third party candidacy in American history. Yes, one that is even bigger than Ross Perot’s candidacy was in the 90s."

Williams continues:

According to a Gallup poll taken in May, 52% Americans say a third major political party is needed. Only 40% say the two current parties do an adequate job of representing the American people...

A new group called Americans Elect may provide Paul with the perfect vehicle for his third party candidacy. The group’s mission is to get a third viable, Independent presidential ticket, chosen by an Internet convention on the ballot in all 50 states. According to their website, Americans Elect has collected almost 2 million signatures.

Since his 2008 presidential campaign, Paul’s popularity has been largely driven by a community of committed Internet supporters. This accounts for his famous ‘money bombs’ – periodic fundraising drives on the Internet. The most recent money bomb brought in $2.5 million for the Paul campaign.

It would be relatively easy for Paul to mobilize his supporters in cyberspace for the Americans Elect online convention.Maybe he wouldn’t even have to mobilize them and they would just do it on their own... [The] history of third party candidates fits Paul’s movement perfectly. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again - we are living in the age of Ron Paul.

  1. What are the odds of a new third party getting on the ballot in 50 states? Even if it were only in enough states to win enough electoral votes to throw the race into the House of Representatives, what are the odds?

  2. It’s too bad Juan Williams and Judge Napolitano don’t work for another organization so that they might rip the vile O’Reilly who completely misrepresents the Constitution, Ron Paul and monetary theory here (one segment in two parts):

This is what the red-state Republican primary voters are learning when not hearing the otherwise deafening silence about Ron Paul and Austrian theory.

  3. I think all this third-party talk, trying to pin Ron down in a third party, is simply done to shove him into a corner and portray him as already written off from the Republican nomination.

It's the only question Talking Heads seem to get excited about when interviewing him.

Without the Ron Paul Army ~ Republicans will be defeated.
Doctor will win the nomination and win the general election.

  6. The Republican base wants Dr. Paul to promise that if he does not receive the nomination, that he will NOT run as an independent, because then they can go back to ignoring him. But as long as he threatens to run independent, they must respect him, because they have come to realize what we Ron Paul supporters already know: The Republican base cannot win in 2012 without us. They therefore have a choice: They can beat Obama with Ron Paul, or they can lose without him.

  7. Ron Paul could very soon be the most consequential GOP candidate.

  8. Given the ongoing surge of Cain, it's looking increasing likely that the rank-and-file Republican is just too stupid to see the gift they have in Ron Paul. The "Killers for Jesus" mentality is just too strong along with their laziness in looking at anything beyond surface appearances. As Robert has indicated frequently, there is likely going to be a bogus, Fed-generated surge in the economy over the next year with accompanying inflation. Obama's hopes probably hinge on how much the economy improves vs. the public reaction to the inflation.

I'm becoming increasingly pessimistic that economic timing will allow the people to wake up in time to nominate Dr. Paul. The vast majority of the Republican debates are over by the end of January. He should stay in until the February 3rd Nevada Caucuses, and if Iowa, Nevada and New Hampshire don't go his way, he should declare he'll run as a third-party and leave the Republicans to shit in their pants. That way, hopefully he'll avoid any of the "sore loser" laws of states like Texas.

No real Ron Paul supporter would vote for one of the other clowns anyway (but for Johnson's stand on maintaining Guantanamo, I could support him -- IMHO, he gave himself away as being very libertarian-lite).

  9. If any of you are wanting Ron Paul to run as a third party canidate you must want to give this upcoming election to Obama. If the vote is split between Republican and Independent Obam wins. Wouldn't that be just peachy

  10. How about if the Libertarian Party, the Constitution Party and this American Elects all join together and have Paul as a fusion candidate? That's something that I and all the other conservaties, libertarian and independants could get behind.

  11. Lol, don't blame us for electing Obama, you guys put McCain up against him.And now you want us to vote for Cain or Romney?

  12. @Anon 5:47 Who gives a shit if Obama is elected or one of the neocon Republican clowns? That's like worrying about tweedledee vs tweedledum. You're exemplifying the exact reason we're in this mess. You're treating politics like it's some kind of football game, and all you care about is your "team" winning. There is nothing about Cain, Romney, Gingrich, or any other Republican sans Ron Paul that will make any fundamental changes in the downward direction of the U.S. All the neocons do is argue about how to collect leviathan's booty and where to set the throttle for the downward plunge. They can't even lets their minds think about pulling back from a quest for world military domination lest Jesus smite them for not killing enough people in His name.

If the next president isn't Ron Paul, it might as well be Obama; it makes no difference.

  13. "...the most the biggest, most consequential third party candidacy in American history...". Not really, check out the election in 1912, the winner, Wilson, only had about 42% of the vote. The Republican ballot was split with Roosevelt and Taft who together had 58%. This is exactly what would happen if Ron Paul were to form a third party.

I hope that is tongue in cheek. It doesn't matter which of the regime supported candidates wins; we're going to get the same thing: more war, increased market intervention, additional police state measures, et cetera.

Ron Paul making some noise as a third party candidate won't reverse this trend (I don't believe enough Americans actually want liberty to keep the state in check), but he might educate some people along the way.

Um, you don't follow the news, do you? Cain has done a crash and burn. Should benefit Dr. Paul to some degree since Cain's greatest appeal was his candor.

  16. Vote Ron Paul in your states primary. Find out if you have to register as a republican before the election.

  17. @Anon 9:01 Maybe you follow the news, but you don't pay attention.

If that was a "crash and burn," it has yet to manifest itself. So far, the Teocons are masturbating over how Cain is sticking it to the liberal media. His polling since the "incident" has remained the same or improved. I'm not sure Cain will stay there long term, but the very fact that none of his supporters can see through his bullshit makes it difficult to have much hope for them. Gingrich is already in the shoot to become the next media sensation should Cain falter.

There is still some hope for Ron Paul should he do well in the early states, but the Teocons seem to be just too clueless. I hope I'm wrong.
