REVIEW: Windows 8 Beats Apple's iOS

Windows 8 hasn't been officially released, yet, but EPJ reader Thomas Sandler has given it a test drive and left the following comment:
I'm in IT management. I have used Windows since Win 3.1. I bought a mac 4 years ago for the first time and I must say I enjoy it! I use it every day. It's pretty cool and works well! Since my business requires that I own many computers, I also have a Windows machine. I installed Win8 on some computer...it's really well designed and works much better than iOS! I was never a Microsoft fan but with Win8 I will probably not buy a mac nor an ipad in the future.

  1. I expect a reasonable and level-headed debate.

A comparison between a desktop operating system and a mobile operating system makes me question the soundness of the opinion, not to mention the many spelling errors in a single sentence.

    1. Sorry for the mistake, English isn't my first language. I just included OS X in iOS because more more OS X become iOS. Just look a the last update: Mountain Lion, it's just iOS for bigger screen!

    2. agree but don't see any spelling errors---just saying

  3. Okay, Macs DON'T run on iOS. They run on OS X. iOS is Apple's mobile platform dedicated to the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad.

Other than that, WHAT is better than "iOS"?

  4. What is with the Windows love fest today? I personally Im so glad I stopped using Windows. No more virus for just browsing a webpage, no more having to reisntall every year, etc...

    1. In keeping with the usual tone of these debates, none of those happen as long as you're not a complete moron!

    2. If you have a windows machine and you are using the internet you have to assume you have some virus of some kind (even with a completely upgraded system). Most virus today just hide and try to not do anything that will anoy you so they remain undetected. Then your computer is used as a "zombie pc" in DDOS attacks for example, but you dont even know it.

If you are using windows and visiting webs your computer has a virus.

    3. Hugo, ever since I installed AVAST 2 or so years ago (completely free by the way) I have not had a single virus issue. Not one. Every time I've attempted to click on a website that has some kind of trojan, virus or whatever AVAST instantly prevents me from accessing it. Try it.

  5. I use both windows on a pc and iOS on an iPhone. I had a Mac laptop once but didnt like it so much. Camparing iOS to windows is apples to oranges. They are both great, but serve different purposes. This article is dumb as hell.

  6. May seem strange to compare desktop and mobile here, but Windows 8 is explicitly trying to blend a mobile interface (Metro) with the desktop. I think Mr. Sandler is saying the mobile interface of Windows 8 seems much better than the mobile interface of iOS.

I've heard a lot of reviewers say this about the current Windows Phone OS as well. The live tile concept seems to be a big improvement over the static icons employed by Android and iOS.

Now we just need developers to help it catch up. I'm totally sold on the Metro design style, but Microsoft has a lot of bugs to work out, and they're starting from last place.

I would love to see a totally integrated experience that let me share apps, settings, documents, and media on all my devices with the same operating system, but I think that dream is still a couple years away.

  7. Hm, I was thinking about getting a new laptop, and I'm glad EPJ reminded me why I should wait.

...But getting Windows again is not something I relish the thought of. I was looking forward to a Mac or something.
At first I thought this article implied I should stick with Windows, so I'm glad Michael Duff took the time to clear that up a bit for me. Cell phone integration isn't something I'm interested in in the least bit.

  8. I absolutely dislike the design, functions and the entire being of Windows, but I'd raise another con for going with Windows 8. But before I do, please go to YouTube and watch some of Apple's videos (iCloud, OS X Mountain Lion, etc).

Now, over the recent years, I've bought a great deal of Apple products. I got my iPod's, iPhone, iPad, iMac, and a few Macbooks. I do have some PC's, Sony MP3 players, and other non-Apple crap. But here's the thing. With iCloud, all my Apple products are in sync. Perfectly! But that sort of thing will NOT happen with other products.

Sure, you could own a PC (running Windows 8), HTC (running Android), Sony MP3 player for jogging, Samsung tablet (running whateva), etc. But none of these things will work together. None of them will communicate with each other. At least not perfectly.

Oh, and I call Microsoft the next Nokia. Mark my words!

  9. Um, what the fuck is iOS. I've been using Macs for about 10 years (Winboxes for 25), and I have yet to have heard of this "iOS" running on a Mac computer. Using Google, the only thing that I can find that runs on iOS is the iPhone, the iPad and the iPod (i.e. not a single Mac computer). Good job MS, your core OS has finally beaten an OS that runs on an iPhone. You must be proud.

For those praising Linux, I must agree. Linux is awesome if you are a programmer who doesn't need to have easy and worry-free integration with everybody else who isn't a programmer (i.e. just about everybody). Other than that it is completely worthless. I have Linux running on the other boot-drive on my Mac (actually, I have Linux, Windoze and OSX on my Mac), and I use it maybe once a year. When it comes to professional programs for audio or film production, Linux is utterly worthless.

Linux is kind of like that 5000 piece puzzle that once you put it together you have a picture of the Grand Canyon. The rest of us, if we want a picture of the Grand Canyon, we just buy a picture of the Grand Canyon. Now comes the question: how many people actually want a picture of the Grand Canyon? Anwer: nobody.

  10. for all the purposes someone with that much understanding has about operating systems, your mac _is_ linux. the darwin kernel, the actual operating system branded "OSX", is a freebsd port. bsd kernels are just another branch of unix; linux and bsd are cousins.

the things you don't like are x-windows, the free, alternative desktop environment from X11, and the decisions that managers of free linux distributions make. you are paying apple to make decisions for you: about 5% more decisions than the debian or ubunutu maintainers make for an infinitely larger price.

it's not for "programmers" it's just for people who understand things.

    1. Yes, I understand how Mac OS works and other versions of Linux and free BSD work, and I used to be interested in that stuff (when it was my job to do so). Nowadays, the only things that I care about is will it do x,y,z, and will it do it without me having to jump through hoops. If I want to do a full-scale audio production, all I want to do is install Logic, hook up my AI's and hit record, mix it and print it. As I have already said, there aren't any good Linux programs out there when it comes to audio/video, at least not at the professional level. I think Ardour is the closest that you'll find, but it is essentially a rip off of Logic, just without the functionality or quality.

      "for people who understand things"

Meh. Let's just say that if I buy a Porsche, I can care less how its engine works, I just want to drive fast as hell with as few mechanical problems as possible. I leave all of that other crap to the engineers who design the thing. The fact that I do understand the mechanics and engineering aspects of automobiles is irrelevant to this fact, because that doesn't pay my bills.

    2. Wow!! J. Fetz, you are a marvel of understanding. Sounds like you are into all the audio, design activities. Mac does that stuff very well, but if you are in most any other kind of business, PC's do that much better and at a significantly lower price than Mac, not even considering the applications available. Just like all the other FAN BOYS, for you Apple is the answer to everything. Keep on buying the overpriced toys too. I own apple stock and you guys are my retirement.

  11. windows 8 has a version that runs on a tablet (and phones) that's why. the Redmond boys and girls aren't going to commit suicide by ignoring the rise of the tablet.
