Romney Must Be Hearing More Ron Paul Footsteps

Michael Tennant explains:
For a man who seems to have the Republican presidential nomination sewn up, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s decision to attack the policies of his only rival who has not dropped out of the race, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas), is curious indeed. Paul has proposed slashing $1 trillion from the federal deficit in his first year in office and balancing the budget in three years. He has argued that much of this deficit reduction could be achieved by ending America’s overseas military operations, closing foreign bases, and bringing the troops home.

Romney, however, will have none of it, reports the Washington Times.

“My job is to get America back on track to have a balanced budget,” he told attendees at a suburban Cleveland town hall event Monday. “Now I’m not going to cut $1 trillion in the first year,” he added — a clear jab at Paul’s plan.

“Why not, someone in the crowd apparently asked,” according to the Times.

“The reason,” Romney explained, “is taking a trillion dollars out of a $15 trillion economy would cause our economy to shrink [and] would put a lot of people out of work.”

This, of course, is pure Keynesian economics — the idea that the economy cannot grow without massive government spending. History proves otherwise: The economy stagnated while the government spent more and more during the Great Depression, but it took off when federal spending plummeted after World War II.

For all his vaunted business acumen, Romney has apparently forgotten that the government cannot spend $1 trillion without first taking it from the private sector. Therefore, if the government fails to spend that money, it is not being taken out of the economy; it is merely being left in the hands of its rightful owners. As a result, it gets put to use meeting people’s needs and improving their standard of living. When the government takes it, however, it is used to meet politicians’ desires for reelection by redistributing wealth and rewarding political cronies. One trillion dollars left in the private sector will do infinitely more good than that same cash will do when confiscated by government.

  1. That's EXACTLY right. We don't want to remove the money from the economy, we just think you can spend your own money more wisely and more effectively than the government can.

  2. Romney is clueless, and he will be as disastrous as Obama.

    Ron Paul 2012 or BUST.

  3. If Romney was a true fiscal conservative, he wouldn't be thinking this way. He says stuff like this because in his mind, he is a liberal. He's no different than Obama on this issue.

    1. Who else agrees with this point of view? We know Obama does, we know Paul Krugman does, and we know Mitt Romney does. So how exactly is Romney going to change things in DC and get the economy going when he favors the same policies as Obama and Krugman?

    2. This election is truly about one thing. Do we want a devout socialist running and controlling every facet of our lives or do we want Romney. I would vote for Mickey Mouse over our present Godless and lying oval office occupant.

    3. The "my socialist is [slightly] better than your socialist" is the asinine logic that keeps putting socialists into office.

    1. How would goldman sachs and other companies who receive billions in corporate welfare and bailouts survive if they had to actually compete in the marketplace?

  5. If only GDP was a measure of the economy, Romney might be right. But alas, adding government spending the to GDP, doesn't mean the economic output of country is growing.

  6. This site must need page views for ad revenue. That is what all sites do when they are desperate for money. They post some ridiculously delusional story about how GREAT Ron Paul is doing (with 95 whole delegates!) because they know that the desperate RonPaulSuicideCultMembers will spam all their contacts (the ones that haven't already defriended them and it might drive some traffic to worthless blogs like this.

    3. Of course, the normal and rational move for someone who supposedly already has the nomination is to start attacking the person who has no shot of winning, right? Not to focus on obama, but to issue press releases talking about how you are going to win and make statements attacking Paul's plan to actually cut govt spending.

That is the first step anyone would take!

    4. Thanks for posting lakawak - really love it when the loyal opposition chimes in with their witty insights.

So do you agree then with Romney that the economy is improved when $1 trillion expropriated from the people is spent by the government? or do you think Romney is a more principled and consistent fiscal conservative then Ron Paul?

Please, don't be shy - would love to know if you actually have a different point of view to share or are just spreading FUD. paul

    5. As they say, "I would love to see the world from your perspective, but I simply can't get my head that far up my ass..."

For any thinking, rational, moral, freedom loving human being there is only one choice - Dr. Paul.

  8. Reporter Ben Swann explains how these delegates Romney thinks he has aren't actually bound at all. Jennifer Sheehan, the RNC's legal counsel, states that the RNC doesn't recognize state delegates as a unit and are all individual free agents that can vote with their conscience over whom their fellow state delegates are choosing. This was in response to a 2008 bound Utah delegate that voted for Romney instead of McCain. If anyone knows more about this please respond.

  9. Lakawak,

For someone who likes to bash others unprovoked, you sure know how to not only demonstrate poor communication skills, but terrible logic as well.

Then again, there's little point refuting such drivel on a blog.

Go back to watching CNBC or FOX.

Come back when you are unemployed and hungry. Maybe then you will have learned your lesson.

Millions of Americans are suffering because of your unfettered asinine logic.

    Anybody but BHO, right? Intelligent!

  11. Unfortunately, that trillion dollars won't be untaxed dollars in the people's pockets. However, it will be a trillion the gov't doesn't have to borrow and pay interest on, which is actually better since they have to tax you later to pay that interest (or borrow more I suppose).
