More on the St Louis Cardinals

A.J. Van Slyke, an EPJ reader, who played in the St Louis Cardinals minor league system, emails this as a follow up to my earlier post on EPJ reading Cardinals.
The Cards have always had the cream of intellectual baseball crop. Thought you might enjoy this quote by my father, Andy, who played in the big leagues for St. Louis and was subsequently traded to Pittsburgh in 1987. He was known for his quips.

He was asked what the major differences between the two teams were and he replied, "With the Cardinals everybody would be reading the business section to see what their stocks were doing. You get to this locker room (Pittsburgh) in the morning and everybody is looking at the sports page to see if Hulk Hogan won."

Not much changed from his era to mine.

  1. Andy (Sr.) seemed like an interesting guy, especially the day when the Pirates were in New York and he and a teammate dropped by Rush Limbaugh's studio and appeared on air. (You know, back in the day when I could stand to listen to Limbaugh...)

I hope Scott makes it to the bigs and does well :-)

  2. hey, I'm a Van Slycke too. Not a common name. It means "from the low lands."

Btw, the "c" was added in not that many generations ago.
