Greg Mankiw Scores Some Points for Free Trade

He writes:
Having learned that the U.S. olympic uniforms were manufactured in China, Senator Harry Reid said, "I think they should take all of the uniforms put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again."

Will some enterprising reporter please ask Senator Reid for the opportunity to inspect the senator's closet and check the labels of his clothing to make sure they are all American-made? I look forward to seeing Mr. Reid's bonfire.

  1. I keep hoping that one day the protectionistas will demand that the Statue of Liberty be destroyed for being foreign-made. I was very optimistic during the Freedom Fries nonsense but alas, it was not to be.

    1. They don't care about tribute, I mean gifts, from the provinces, I mean our allies.

  2. Senator Reid had better check EPA and local ordinances before setting new clothes on fire. But look at all the jobs that will be created! A guy to build some matches, a gas can, the new jobs in textiles, boxes and packaging, thread makers, shipping jobs, cotton farmers. Hey, he might be on to something! We could just start burning Wal*Marts down...

  3. So what Harry Reid is essentially saying, is that he can agree completely with any or all foreign nations that will make big piles of American export products and set them ablaze, after which they will no longer import any further U.S. products.

    Correct?

With such astonishing insights, the economic future of America is in good hands.

And what's next to be burned, by the way? Foreign books?
