Rand Paul to Propose Moratorium on Foreign Nationals at U.S. Flight Schools

Rand Paul writes:
Later this month, I will be proposing a moratorium on foreign nationals being trained in our flights schools. The moratorium will last a minimum of six months, and will not be lifted until TSA, DHS and Congress agree that they have the necessary safeguards in place to protect Americans from the very situation that caused 9/11
What will be the unintended consequence of this? They will train to fly at schools outside the U.S., which will mean we will know even less about them and what they might be up to.

Taking away anyone's, who has not violated the freedom of others, is never a good idea.

  1. But even worse when the instructors at the flight schools had a word with some of the FBI's regional offices that some of their students ie the hijackers, might be up to no good, National headquarters spiked any investigations.
But looking into that would upset a lot of Rand's new chums which is why he's making this empty gesture.

  2. Apparently, Rand Paul has morphed into a politician. How sad.

And I’m wary of the opinion that flight school training of foreign nationals was at the heart of “the very situation that caused 9/11.” But let me check with Dick Cheney on that and I’ll get back to you.

  4. The U.S. is still (barely) more free when it comes to the exercise of aviation by private individuals (although the government, led by the FAA, has seemingly tried to completely kill GA off). Often, foreign nationals' only chance to ever lear to fly is time they spend in the U.S. When I could still afford to fly a few years ago, there were quite a few (at least judged by radio accents) foreigners learning to fly at my home base. I seriously doubt that they were out to bring down America.

Apparently, Rand Paul wants to put even more strain on an already heavily-strained general aviation industry.

  5. They may not come to the U.S. after they graduate. Supposedly, the rest of the world, specifically Asia, is getting more demand for air flights.

In the U.S., there will be a load of pilots retiring since they can only go until a certain age according to U.S. law. Whatever the economic outlook will be, this will leave a huge demand for pilots. So, I'm wondering if this has more to do with the economy and eliminating job competition than it does with terrorism.

But, I may be looking into it too much...

  6. I think Rand made a record time in his sprint from liberty hero to asshole.

What that asshole does not understand (or understands perfectly well but prefers to ignore) is that training foreign nationals is one of the major sources of income for American flight schools. Airlines around the world are staffed with pilots trained in US - to the benefit of passengers of all nations.

Taking away this income will cause many flight schools to go out of business, with cascading effects in reduction of demand for FBO services and even closure of smaller GA airports deprived of the revenue.

(For the record, I'm a pilot).

  7. Time to put a moratorium on allowing Rands anywhere near libertarianism.

  8. Thanks Rand! I feel safer already.

But what would REALLY make me feel safe is beating up a third world country that can't fight back. Any bets on when the Randster will go full neocon and jump on the war bandwagon?

    1. Well, he has endorsed Romney and Clark Durant, so he as endorsed at least two full blown warmongers already.

If he endorses these kinds of people and they win, he really doesn't have to do the dirty work himself.

  9. It took three hijacked crashes for passengers to figure it out.

There will be no more hijackings.

They might bomb the plane, but the plane will never again be a bomb.

The crew and passengers know they will die if they allow a hijacking.

Alternatively, a private aircraft COULD be used for terrorism... but frankly a private aircraft won't carry enough fuel - or even explosives if they wanted to try that - to do much of anything.

In short this card has been played and cannot be called back.

Rand's moratorium will do nothing but inconvenience people and hurt businesses.

  10. Rand just gave us a glimpse with this 'Judas Kiss'. He's shown us that HE has the plans that will organize society the greatest. Wasn't he the one who told government that to restrict choice in anything was a limit on freedom in discussing light bulbs.

I guess Rand feels his Dad has it all wrong.

"Hey Dad" he would say, "I know you care about these people and you've been trying to show them the way... But... I just feel you're doing it all wrong. You gotta get in there and SHOW them the way!"

    1. if they offer the right amount of cash and the flight schools accepts, why not? what gives a jackass senator the 'right' to decide who can learn to fly?
