Obama Campaign: Ryan Kisses the Ring of Adelson

This email went out by the Obama for America campaign:
Benjamin --

Today, just 72 hours after joining the GOP ticket, Paul Ryan is making a pilgrimage to the Sands' Venetian casino in Las Vegas to kiss the ring of Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino magnate who's already donated more than $35 million to Republican groups in this election.

That's the same Sheldon Adelson who gave $15 million to help Newt Gingrich against Mitt Romney in the primary, and said he may give $100 million -- basically, whatever it costs -- to defeat Barack Obama.
We're starting to get a glimpse of how Romney plans to cash in on his vice presidential pick. Before Ryan's even been fully introduced to the American people, he's attending a private fundraiser in Vegas with the top super PAC donor.

We're doing this differently, with ordinary people chipping in whatever they can afford -- but it's going to take a lot more of us to match them. Will you donate $3 or more today

Breitbert is interpreting the email this way:
This isn’t just a rip against Adelson, which has become the Democrats’ favorite pastime – or perhaps their second favorite pastime, next to attacking the apparently omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent Koch brothers. This is deeply offensive language – it’s religious language. Ryan isn’t just visiting Adelson – he’s “making a pilgrimage” to Vegas. A religious pilgrimage, you might say. And what’s more, Ryan, a Catholic, is going to “kiss the ring” of Adelson. The implication: Ryan worships money. Or, in this case, a rich Jew. The language is purposefully written to mirror the idea of pilgrimage to Rome to kiss the ring of the pope. Only Rome is now Vegas, and the pope is a wealthy Jew.

  1. It's definitely something that wouldn't have happened 8 or even 4 years ago. But things are a bit different today. BY now, Obama must have noticed a substantial number of Americans have grown sick of the "special relationship." It's an untapped pool of potential voters. The problem for Obama is, "how do I get to them without alienating, the Lester Crowns and the Haim Sabans that support me?"

I guess Breitbert noticed the conundrum and is doing what the Israel firsters do best: throw around accusations of anti-semitism. This time, liven it up by also ascribing anti-Catholic undertones to the Obama mailer.

Time will tell how this will play out.

  2. A tell-tale sign you have hit pay-dirt is when neocons start whining about anti-semitism.

The Obama people are right that Israel-firster Sheldon Adelson is trying to use his fortune to buy the Republican ticket, and that Romney and Ryan are tripping over themselves to kiss Sheldon Adelson's ultra-zionist ring.

Where they are very dishonest though is at the end when they act like they aren't doing the same thing and funding their campaign through strictly small donations. How they can in good conscience say this when Obama is attending +$25,000 a plate dinners every other day is beyond me.

    1. A great example of the hypocrisy is this:

NJDC calls on Romney to cancel Paul tribute at Republican convention due to his "disparaging of the Israel-US relationship."

I guess Murray Rothbard was a one of those notorious "self-hating Jews."

  3. Obama groveled in front of AIPAC, too. It's required for anyone who wants to be U.S. president.
