The 5 Richest Cities in America

According to MarketWatch:

No. 1: Bridgeport, Conn.

Per-capita personal income in the area, which also includes Stamford and Norwalk, reached $78,504

No. 2: Midland, Texas

Midland, population 113,000, is at the heart of the oil- and natural-gas-producing region known as the Permian Basin.

The Permian Basin is the U.S.’s largest area in proven reserves of crude oil, accounting for a quarter of the nation’s supply, and the ninth in natural-gas proven reserves.
The unemployment rate in Midland is 3.3%.

No. 3: San Francisco

San Francisco’s per-capita personal income was $61,395 in 2011.

No. 4: San Jose, Calif.

San Jose’s per-capita personal income was $61,028 in 2011.

No. 5: Washington D.C.

Washington’s per-capital personal income was $59,345 in 2011. As government takes and takes, the takers live well.

  1. Comparing DC to the 50 states and large metro areas, well, DC has done swimmingly over the last six years, during the worst economic and financial crisis for the country since the Great Depression.

  2. United Van Lines is one of the largest moving companies in the US. Each year, they have a migration study looking at outbound shipments for interstate shipments. They include all 48 states in the continental US, as well as DC. Among those 49 'states,' DC has had the most inmigration in each of the last four years.

  3. Bridgeport, Norwalk and Stamford are three separate cities- are they all lumped together in this study? Bridgeport being the richest city in America is, well, incredible as one who has driven by it often.
