Bizarre Hastings Coroner Report: He Was Using Drugs But Not Considered a Factor In Crash

Michael Hastings, who was killed in a fiery Los Angeles crash in June, died of "traumatic injuries" as a result of the accident and had traces of drugs in his system, Los Angeles coroner's officials said, according to LaTi.

Coroner's officials said Hastings had traces of amphetamine in his system, consistent with possible intake of methamphetamine many hours before death,  as well as marijuana. However, neither were considered a factor in the crash, according to toxicology reports.

Hastings had arrived in Los Angeles from New York the day before the accident, with his brother scheduled to arrive later the day of the crash "as his family was attempting to get [Hastings] to go to detox," the report stated.

In an interview with CNN, Hastings' widow Elise Jordan called the crash a “really tragic accident.”

Jordan served as a director for communications in the National Security Council from 2008-09. She worked in the White House Office of Presidential Speechwriting, at the U.S. Embassy, Baghdad and for the Commanding General's Strategic Advisory Group at the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) headquarters in Kabul, Afghanistan, as well as speechwriter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice

  1. Robert,

In spite of her credentials, I trust that Elise Jordan is not suspect in any way. Back during the 2012 primary, I saw her on MSNBC (I think) repeatedly and vehemently defending Ron Paul's foreign policy views, much to the discomfort of the other commentators on the program. She seemed very much sincere, and even idealistic.

Michael Hastings also spoke supportively of Ron Paul during a number of TV appearances. I got the impression that both of them were big fans of Ron Paul, but probably didn't want to give an outright endorsement.

If Elise Jordan says that Hastings' death was an accident, I'm willing to believe that's what she believes. Whether or not it's the actual truth is, of course, another matter.

So... is the LA Times saying that Hastings was on the verge of joining rehab?

  3. She is no dummy. Her car isn't immune to the same fate as her husbands.
