Greenwald: Britain Is Going to Be Sorry

Glenn Greenwald, the journalist who first published secrets leaked by fugitive former U.S. intelligence agency contractor Edward Snowden vowed on Monday to publish more documents and said Britain will be "sorry" for detaining his partner for nine hours, reports Reuters, after Greenwald's partner was detained for 9 hours at UK's Heathrow Airport.

"I will be far more aggressive in my reporting from now. I am going to publish many more documents. I am going to publish things on England too. I have many documents on England's spy system. I think they will be sorry for what they did," Greenwald, speaking in Portuguese, told reporters at Rio's airport where he met Miranda upon his return to Brazil.

"They wanted to intimidate our journalism, to show that they have power and will not remain passive but will attack us more intensely if we continue publishing their secrets," he said.

  1. The British lapdogs of the American Surveillance State are not only brutal but stupid as well. Glenn, like Ed Snowden, is fearless. Couldn't they foresee what effect harassing his partner would have on him? Another reason why the British and American would-be tyrants deserve everything they get.

  2. Admire the spunk, but have to raise a question. Why should the actions of the authorities matter for the timing and vigor with which you pursue and report stories? If they are newsworthy, they are newsworthy, period.

    1. Can't blame him for being angry and wanting to make them sorry for what they did.

    2. Up until this point, the focus has been on exposing the NSA (according to a recent interview with Ben Swann). What Glen is saying is that now he's going to expand that to what the UK is doing too.

    3. He may be forced to rush future stories as the British authorities would be expected to take further actions that may hinder his ability to publish.

  3. Glenn and his beau both admire spunk. Hi-yo! (Not that there is anything wrong with that).

  4. because a human being is a human being, and emotions motivate us.

    he's not a robot.

just like a veteran who has seen war upfront might be more emotionally committed to the cause of fighting the warfare state, someone whose partner has been singled out by the bureaucratic surveillance leviathan to punish him will be far more motivated in the fight.

  6. That Greenwald seems to have been provoked is understandable, his reaction is however not laudable. Journalism should be objective and dispassionate and follow its purposes from public good not revenge. This demeans Greenwald. I am not being pompous as Bergman says if he has stories that are news worthy and in the public interest he should be pursuing them for that reason. There is a great danger that Greenwald and Assange will be considered as part of a unaccountable elite using the information they acquire for their own ends.
Greenwald's comments could be seen to be supporting that notion.

    1. Since it's actually men and women doing the journalism, I'm afraid what you're going to get is always passionate. I admire the ones who admit it instead of trying to pretend that they have somehow become automatons devoid of natural emotions and motivations, able to turn off their human-ness while they are working. Journalism is people. Government is people. Military is people.

      Give 'em hell, Glenn!

  8. Because, Bill, Greenwald is literally defending his life from those who would gladly put a bullet in his head if they thought they could get away with it. Those documents are the one (only) weapon Greenwald has to both protect him from government retribution AND to allow him to bring transparency to illicit government secrecy. If the global U.S. bully and its minions are going to try and shove Greenwald around, he's going to shove back

  9. Peter, your statement about what journalism should be is ridiculous pap straight from some editor or prof. It's not true, nor has it ever been true, nor does it need to be true. Nothing wrong with advocacy. Nothing wrong with trying to get at those sobs.

  10. Anything exposing the Govt should be welcomed! We the people should know what our elected representatives are up to.

  11. I don't support government aggression but, why is it surprising government oppressors would detain Greenwald's partner? Did he do the groundwork? Did he do the interviews? Is he Snowden's real contact? It makes perfect sense to me that, if police suspect Greenwald of crimes, baseless though those suspicious may be, they would arrest his business partner and interrogate him. He's traveling with multiple computers, and while not a crime, it is guaranteed to set off alarm bells for authorities.

  12. If our Security Services and Police are managed by Public School Boys and "old brigade" what do you expect. Modern times outdated thinking - serves them right. This was a stupid thing to do (and we will show not unauthorised)

  13. I think it is about time that reporters, journalist take a good hard look in the mirror and ask themselves, am I a reporter/journalist or am I a lackey? Am I just someone else's puppet and is that what I really want to be remember as, a puppet/lackey/lapdog. I mean come on, how long are you as a person going to be brow beaten into telling a story you know is untrue as though it were.

Do you want ratings or do you want to be a hero and expose the beast systems you currently serve and become legendary not because MSNBC or CBS or ABC or even RT or any others state you are a legend with some medal. But that you report doggedly for the truth of the matter, the situation and admit when you made a mistake, we know you're human...

But if your intentions are to mislead and you knowingly are doing so, when the free people fight back and we bring out the hangman's noose to dispense justice...Which side do you want to be on? The stage with a noose around your neck, or in the crowd jeering at your oppressors as the slack is taken out of their ropes? Or do you believe we'll not be able to win against such a machine as this? And you think you're on the winning side? Heaven and God forbid it! I'll choose freedom, and the liberty to choose who and what I serve. I will not be a lackey, a scam artist, or a shill. Decide how your name is recorded in history.
