Apparently Lots of People Do Want to Shop on Thanksgiving

U.S. shoppers spent $9.74 billion at stores on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. That's a drop of 13.2 percent compared with the same day last year, according to preliminary data released on Saturday by research firm ShopperTrak.

The decline appears to be because more Americans were shopping on the holiday itself: Combined spending on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, which had previously been considered the official start to the holiday buying season until this year, rose 2.3 percent to $12.3 billion.

  1. Yeah, but that's because of a "collective action problem."
We would all be better off if we all agree not to do it.
I know this because libertarian superstar Megan McArdle said so.

  2. So retailers who opened not omly managed to destroy one of the great "Norman Rockwell" aspects of American society, they also cannibalized their "Black Friday" sales AND sowed animosity among their workforce! A HOME RUN FOR UNQUENCHABLE GREED, DESTRUCTION OF FAMILY VALUES AND GENERAL CORPORATE STUPIDITY! Oh, good show!

    1. Maybe you and some like minded zealots can get some guns and force these greedy bastards to stay closed.

  3. If the doorbusters start on Thursday, obviously its going to draw more people out on the holiday, since that is their primary reason for going early anyway.
