The Biblical Argument for a Higher Minimum Wage

This argument comes courtesy of that great incubator for scholarly biblical and economic research, the governorship of Illinois.

“There’s a principle as old as the Bible that if you work 40 hours a week you shouldn’t have to live in poverty,” Illinois Governor Pat Quinn told MSNBC today. “This is a fundamental principle that we want to carry out across our state and indeed across our country."

Notes NRO: The 40-hour workweek, to be precise, is an innovation of the Industrial Revolution.

  1. Well them we should define poverty in Biblical terms. I am willing to bet my right arm that a " poor" person today is far more wealthier than most of the rich (if not all) of the rich in Biblical times.

  2. This goes along with the Constitution is 400 years old, and actually using Able's murderous brother's (Cain) sarcastic retort against God "brother's keeper" as a theme to promote welfare programs. These guys are stupid. HAHAHAHAHA!

  3. Its a well-known fact that when Jesus was working as a carpenter, He would get time and a half if he clocked over 40 hours a week.

  5. He doesn't actually say this is a Biblical principle. He says the principle is "as old as" the Bible. There's a difference. It's not actually clear which Bible he means although presumably he means the New Testament.

  6. This is absolutely infuriating. The level of ignorance of basic history and economics on display here should boggle the mind of any sane, rational human being. Then again, Mencken wrote that in a democracy, demagogues and charlatans will always be willing to manipulate the mob so that they can retain their office of "public service."

What annoys me (has me filling with rage, really) is the fact that seminaries in America are filling up with liberation theology-oriented progressives who will use the Bible to make a political point, holding it in infallible regard, but yet they're the first ones to deny the supernatural events of the New Testament (i.e. the miracles of Christ and even the Resurrection) when challenged on the matter. Nothing is sacred for these people except the Communist Manifesto. When I attended a Methodist seminary, some were more open about their Marxist/Communist ideology than others, but it truly is a tragedy that so many churches (not to mention minds and souls) will be destroyed by these Marxist ideologues.

Liberation theology isn't just for the Jesuits. I assure you, there are Marxists "hiding behind priest's collars" (to quote Tom DiLorenzo) in more traditions than most of us would like to imagine.

I think that the verse (verses?) in question is part of the same passage with "god helps those who help themselves".
