Life as a San Francisco Landlord

An acquaintance of mine owns several office buildings in San Francisco. He prefers office buildings to residential because of the onerous rental regulations in the city. But that doesn't mean he is entirely free of SF residential regulatory madness.

He rented a small space out to one individual, who it turns out is sleeping in the space. He stopped paying rent months ago and through various legal maneuvers has avoided being evicted. He even told the landlord, "I really hate doing this to you, but I have nowhere to go."

His latest legal move: He is trying to get a restraining order against the landlord.

  1. Reminds me of the movie Pacific Heights with Michael Keaton which illustrates an abusive tenant taking advantage of California laws against his landlords.
