White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest confirmed Monday that President Obama is "very interested" in the idea of raising taxes through unilateral executive action.
"The president certainly has not indicated any reticence in using his executive authority to try and advance an agenda that benefits middle class Americans," Earnest said in response to a question about Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) calling on Obama to raise more than $100 billion in taxes through IRS executive action.
"Now I don't want to leave you with the impression that there is some imminent announcement, there is not, at least that I know of," Earnest continued. "But the president has asked his team to examine the array of executive authorities that are available to him to try to make progress on his goals. So I am not in a position to talk in any detail at this point, but the president is very interested in this avenue generally," Earnest finished.

Our own little dictator.....
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if I'm wrong, but don't tax increases have to originate in the House of Representatives? Not that the GOP establishment would put up anything more than a "for show" fight and then cave, but what would be their options?
ReplyDeleteGood idea, then the next conservative President can announce there twill be no prosecution of failure to pay income taxes in excess of 23% of Adjusted Gross Income. No need for that Congress thingie.
ReplyDelete23 percent?!?! ludicrous.!!!!! the Libertarian President will announce no prosecutions for failure to pay income taxes in excess of a flat rate of $20.
DeleteIf he can raise them this way, then at least the precedent is set for someone to do the same in the opposite direction at a later date.
ReplyDeleteHahHaha... By which politician????? Thanks, I needed a good laugh today
DeleteThis would be great, since it would open up a few more million eyes to the fact that we live in a de facto fascist police state.
ReplyDeleteTalk about creating regime uncertainty. This President demonstrates just how clueless he is about how businesses think and forecast everytime he opens his mouth. If I'm a CEO of a US business, I begin contingency planning today. I probably also begin pumping even more money into the political system ASAP. Perhaps that's the real goal. That is how they do it in heavily Democrat run states and locals.
ReplyDeleteSorry, munch and Keith, but "tax reform" only goes one way. Up.
ReplyDeleteWelp. Doesn't everybody know all one needs to be President is a pen and a phone? Oh...and the BIG plane?
