Socialist Expected to Gain Leadership of UK's Labour Party

Jeremy Corbyn is expected to be elected president of the UK's Labour Party.

He is also a member of the Socialist Campaign Group.

A self-described democratic socialist, Corbyn has advocated the renationalisation of public utilities and railways, re-opening coal mines, combating corporate tax evasion and avoidance as an alternative to austerity.

He is also in favor of abolishing university tuition fees and restoring student grants, cancellation of the Trident nuclear weapons programme, quantitative easing to fund infrastructure and renewable energy projects, and reversing cuts to the public sector and welfare made since 2010 by the government of David Cameron.

Corbyn proposes to have the Bank of England create money to invest in housing and public transport, described byhim as "people's quantative easing".

Corbyn has called for Labour to learn from the insane Greek Syriza party that cut a deal with the banksters, saying recently: ““I have been in Greece, I have been in Spain. It’s very interesting that social democratic parties that accept the austerity agenda and end up implementing it end up losing a lot of members and a lot of support. I think we have a chance to do something different here.”

Maybe Corbyn won't get in. Rupert Murdoch now tweets:

  1. Hasn't the English "austerity" been going pretty good? I mean it is no free market and there is a ton of bueracracy, but hasn't thier economy improved overall since 2009?

  2. there is no possiblility of a spend spend spend Labour government as there is no way labour can get back into power without Scotland and Camerons lot will do anything to make sure the SNP get anything they want to stop labour making inroads in scotand ever again, even without the Blairite/Corbynite split.

The City’s stranglehold makes Britain look like an oh-so-civilised mafia state George Monbiot George MonbiotBe reasonable in response to the unreasonable: this is what voters in the Labour election are told. Accommodate, moderate, triangulate, for the alternative is to isolate yourself from reality.

You might be inclined to agree. If so, please take a look at the reality to which you must submit. To an extent unknown since before the first world war, economic relations in this country are becoming set in stone. It is not just that the very rich no longer fall while the very poor no longer rise. It’s that the system itself is protected from risk. Through bailouts, quantitative easing and delays in interest-rate rises, speculative investment has been so well cushioned that – as the Guardian economics editor, Larry Elliott, puts it – financial markets are “one of the last bastions of socialism left on Earth”.
