Trump Threatens BMW With 35% Tax on Cars Built in Mexico...

...what an economic ignoramus.

President-elect Donald Trump has warned the United States will impose a border tax of 35 percent on cars that German carmaker BMW plans to build at a new plant in Mexico and export to the U.S. market.

Trump gave the warning in an interview with German newspaper Bild.

A BMW spokeswoman said a BMW Group plant in San Luis Potosi would build the BMW 3 Series starting from 2019, with the output intended for the world market. The plant in Mexico would be an addition to existing 3 Series production facilities in Germany and China.

Trump said BMW should build its new car factory in the United States because this would be "much better" for the company.

Now everybody knowns that people voted for this guy so he can run an extortion racket of global dimensions. Now he's threatening a Germany-based company to build factories in the US. Is the idea to threaten everyone possible to make everything in the US? Sneakers? Bottle openers? Trumpistas want some poor mother to pay 13 dollars for a pair of socks for her kid, leave one a pack of three pairs. Because the heck with economics and consumer sovereignty - it is our patriotic duty to help the (mythical) "American Worker(TM)".

    1. Don't you understand what voting is Torres? Voting is about telling your neighbors how to live and directing their wealth to yourself. Trump voters are no different than the usual sort of voter.

BTW, it is possible to make socks in the USA to sell for a low shelf price because I've bought such socks over the last many years without concerning myself where they are made. In fact there are two such packs of new socks in my closet.

Anything is possible. That's not what this is about. What this is about is giving the consumer NO choice as a way to impose patriotic duty on them.

    3. I've known people who closed textile plants in the US that would differ with you on that point.

  2. So the tariff would not apply to BMWs that were made in Germany, right?

  3. The effect of NAFTA has been to transfer thousands of manufacturing jobs from Americans to Mexicans. Time to undo NAFTA.

    2. its not competition its economic extortion on behalf of the oligarchy and the Monopolies that control it. Free trade as everyone calls it is not even remotely close to the authentic article.

    3. If you want to rip up NAFTA and replace it with genuine free trade then, hallelujah, I'm with you.

But Trump's statements make it clear as day that he dislikes trade agreements precisely because they permit some modicum of free trade, and stand in the way of the Tariff World he wants to establish.

  5. BMW's line up is already taxed via CAFE. Although that hurts US automakers as well because it effectively keeps them from competing against BMW full force. (if they make too many cars like that they'll be CAFE penalized too)
