Rand Paul Lets It Rip on Trump's Tax Reform Proposal

Sen. Rand Paul continues to take sound positions in the direction of a less interventionist government and is not afraid to call out the Trump administration for phony government shrinkage.

Rand just put out this tweet criticizing the Mnuchin-Cohn Trump administration tax reform bill:
Heroic comment by Rand!

The link he includes in his tweet is to a study from the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center which found that by 2027, almost 30 percent of taxpayers with income between about $50,000 and $150,000 would see their taxes increase under the plan that the White House and congressional GOP leaders released last week.

  1. Bob,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the large share of people who get a tax hike from this is entirely due to eliminating the state income tax deduction (thus, ensuring that the residents who live in blue states and vote for high taxes actually have to feel the burden).

While I'm certainly in favor of lower taxes for any and all reasons, I'm not particularly outraged by this. If Californians want higher taxes, let them pay higher taxes. Why should they get to deduct that from federal?

    1. Why assume elections are unanimous or even meaningful?

Politicians have longed developed ways to increase taxes such that more people feel they benefit more than they pay and reduce their accountability to the voters to zero.

Even with highly opposed taxes the elected office holders get away with it. In Illinois some are simply not running for re-election after voting to increase the income tax. They just voted for it and now they are ducking out and taking pensions. That's the sort of representation that the people get.
