Democratic Socialist Writer Levels With Voters: We Want to ‘End Capitalism’

Fox news reports:
The rise of “democratic socialism” has been one of the key developments in the Democratic Party in recent years...

One of the ways the movement is presented is with the claim that this is not your grandfather’s socialism -- or the socialism of the former Soviet Union, Venezuela or other failed states. It’s more “Scandinavian health care” than overthrowing the bourgeoisie.

But now a democratic socialist writer is leveling with voters, telling them that actually, yes, they want to topple capitalism.

"I’m a staff writer at the socialist magazine Jacobin and a member of [the Democratic Socialists of America], and here’s the truth: In the long run, democratic socialists want to end capitalism.
In an article for Vox, Meagan Day, a writer for the socialist magazine Jacobin and a democratic socialist, says the goal is to pursue a “reform agenda today in an effort to revive a politics focused on class hierarchy and inequality in the United States.”

“The eventual goal is to transform the world to promote everyone’s needs rather than to produce massive profits for a small handful of citizens,” she says...

Day goes on to reject the idea that democratic socialism is just a modern form of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal, as some have suggested.

“But we also want more than FDR did. A robust welfare state in an economy that’s still organized around capitalists’ profits can mitigate the worst inequalities for a while, but it’s at best a temporary truce between bosses and workers — and one that the former will look to scrap as soon as they can,” she argues.

In the meantime, she argues that the goals of democratic socialists should be to go and fight battles that will eventually rally people together to fight what she calls “the capitalist Goliaths currently in charge of our society.”
This is pure Leninist strategy. Advance as far as one can at any given time and bring along as many useful idiots as possible, and then advance more. It is done by the infiltration of the most popular causes that align with the deeper full socialist program.

The Trump presidency is making the recruiting much easier.

  1. Socialist indoctrination in the educational institutions is more effective than Trump.

  2. It's all okay. I've stocked up on enough toilet paper to last for decades.

  3. I always thought it was weird and presumptuous to add modifiers to “democratic”. Like, what if the electorate doesn’t vote for socialism? Then what? Ditto “liberal democracy.” What if the voters are a bunch of fascists?

Democracy is a process. Socialism is more of an outcome. How could you possibly bundle the two into a coherent ideology? It seems like a cheap tactic of smuggling in the notion of consent (not that democracy actually remotely equates to consent.)

  4. If by some remote chance America is transformed into the socialist paradise envisioned by Day and the fruitless “visionaries” that came before her, who will these socialist blame for the abject poverty that is sure to ensue? Who will they blame for the political class hierarchy that is sure to exist where those at the top of that heap are sure to enjoy better food, better housing, better transportation, better clothes, etc.? Or will they devote themselves to their egalitarian principles and live in poverty like the rest of mankind?

Since capitalism will no longer exist who or what groups will be the focus of their wrath? Or will they finally get it? But how will they get it if they ignore or are ignorant of the laws of economics?

    1. Re: The Lab Manager,

What are you talking about? Most immigrants aren't socialist. They at most could be as susceptible to facile demagoguery as American citizens. But that doesn't mean they're socialist.

Also, you continue to muddle the argument by equivocating. No one favors open borders as your paranoid mind defines them. The Market is the best regulator of who is invited in and who is not. An open border within the framework of a free markets means free for people to engage in unhindered voluntary commerce; a border where the flow of goods, services, capital and, yes, labor, is free. That is as 'open' a border as it needs to be, no more.
