Chief Economist Opening at Trulia

We are looking for our next Chief Economist to lead the economic research team in San Francisco. If you are passionate about telling stories using data-driven insights, explaining sometimes difficult concepts to consumers in an approachable and interesting manner, enjoy public speaking and presenting your research in front of small or large audiences, and are energized by the opportunity to become a public-facing expert, then this is the job for you!
The Chief Economist will use Trulia’s and outside data to develop housing-market insights and share these insights with the press (broadcast and print), as well as industry professionals, academics and policymakers. The Chief Economist will be the primary spokesperson and will work closely with the rest of the Trulia economic research team in a highly collaborative environment, as well as Trulia’s communication, marketing, and data engineering teams. The ideal candidate will help improve upon the high quality research output of the Trulia Economics Team and help manage and strategize the research production process.

Who you are

Responsibilities:

  • Be Trulia’s primary research spokesperson and be deeply comfortable talking to reporters daily to engage in print and broadcast interviews.
  • Research and analyze real estate market conditions, interesting real estate patterns, and past and future market trends.
  • Provide peer review of team research projects, offering guidance and constructive feedback on methodology, code, written analysis and conclusions.
  • Work with media to customize Trulia data and insights for their stories/inquiries.
  • Develop quick and informed insight on new data releases by the U.S. Census and other agencies.
  • Work cross-functionally with PR, product, marketing, engineering and senior management.
Qualifications:
  • A graduate degree in economics or other related field: Ph.D. or Master’s degree plus 7 or more years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of econometrics, multivariate statistics, and economic theory, and the ability to apply these skills.
  • Experience with R and SQL or similar statistical software packages (e.g., Stata, SAS, Python). Our team works primarily in R, Python and SQL.
  • Familiarity with publicly available summary data and microdata.
  • Great teammate with creativity, curiosity, tenacity, and conscientiousness.
  • Driven self-starter with a strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Strong writing and speaking skills – someone who can correctly and concisely explain research findings in a consumer-friendly narrative.
  • Experience with public speaking or public presentations is desired, but not required.
Why Us:
  • Your work will be highly impactful. Our research is picked up by the nation’s most reputable publications as well as in public-facing tools used by millions of Trulia consumers.
  • Your work will be intellectually engaged. Top-of-mind research questions change from day to day. While there are some constant threads in our work, our specific research topics evolve and adapt to the state of the housing market and the economy.
  • You will have the opportunity to develop your skills. Our team is a tremendous resource to each other. We have an incredible range of analytical and technical skills and we love the opportunity to teach others and learn from one another.
