Thatcher gets on the contender list because she was a chemist before becoming the UK's first female Prime Minister, famously helping come up with the formula for soft-scoop ice cream. (UK Mirror)
But the contender list at this point is very long. Bank of England had received 172,000 nominations since November 2 (the public was allowed to make nominations), and currently a nomination counts simply if the person is "real, deceased and has contributed to the field of science in any way".
