BREAKING: US Rejects China Offer of Preparatory Trade Talks

The Trump administration has rejected an offer by two Chinese vice-ministers to travel to the US this week for preparatory trade talks because of a lack of progress on two important issues.

This is a developing story. Return to this post for updates.

UPDATE 1

This week’s planned trip by Wang Shouwen and Liao Min to pave the way for a higher-level meeting in Washington on January 30 and 31 between Liu He, China vice-premier, and Robert Lighthizer, US trade representative has been canceled.

UPDATE 2

If an agreement is not reached by March 1, President Donald Trump will go full mercantilist. Specifically, he has said he will more than double the punitive tariff rate imposed on about half of all Chinese exports to the US, from 10 per cent to 25 per cent.

UPDATE 3

Kudlow denies story.

Kudlow to CNBC: "With respect, the story is not true. ... There was never a planned meeting. Look, the big meeting, that everyone's you know, moving towards, will be Vice Premier Liu He."

  1. I think Trumpistas can stop the charade and concede that Trump is lying every time he claims he's a free trader.
