By the looks of things, the rare book market is very strong.
A first edition copy of The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand in excellent condition is on sale for $75,000. (John W. Knott Jr., Bookseller)
Rand's book sold for a much higher price than The Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett. The Hammett book, made famous because of the Humphrey Bogart and Mary Astor film based on the novel, is selling for $65,000. (Peter L. Styrne & Co.)
The first Roman Catholic edition (1582) of the New Testament in English is on sale for $29,000. (Bauman Rare Books)
A copy of John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is on sale for $65,000. (Athena Rare Books)
An Amsterdam edition of Sir Issac Newton's Principia Mathematica is on sale for $18,000.(Athena Rare Books)
But the highest price I spotted was for the first edition (1867) of the anti-capitalist tract Das Kapital by Karl Marx. It was on sale for $175,000. (Herman H.J. Lynge & Son A/S)
Marx must have put a lot of labor into writing that book.
