USMCA is a big-time crony benefit to unions to help them stay alive in America by protecting their workers against foreign competition.
The deal is designed to squeeze Mexican factories so that they can't compete with US manufacturers. This will do nothing but raise prices and lower the general standard of living in the United States.
In a press release endorsing the deal, the AFL-CIO states:
For the first time, there truly will be enforceable labor standards—including a process that allows for the inspections of factories and facilities that are not living up to their obligations. How much of a benefit is this deal to unions?
This is the first time labor unions have backed any trade pact since the tiny U.S.-Jordan deal in 2001, and the first time they have supported any trade agreement of consequence since the Kennedy Round of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in the 1960s writes Edward Alden at the Council on Foreign Relations.
And, it just gets worse, in many directions, from there. More from Alden:
The new USMCA includes a long wish list of Democratic trade priorities, including tighter rules of origin for car manufacturing...intrusive provisions aimed at strengthening independent labor unions in Mexico, stronger protections for environmental laws, and weakened protection for pharmaceutical patents. Pelosi and the House Democrats repeatedly praised the Trump administration’s willingness to work with them on the deal...-RW
Had a Democratic president tried to push through such changes in USMCA, Republicans would have denounced the deal as a socialist abomination.
UPDATE
Whoops, apparently Mexico is only going to take so much abuse:
#USMCA negotiations are NOT over. @JesusSeade will return to Washington after Mexico grew angry at language in implementing bill describing role of new US labor attaches to monitor and enforce labor obligations in Mexico. https://t.co/uTy1kqB6MS— Adam Behsudi (@ABehsudi) December 14, 2019
So please tell us how my standard of living will be reduced? Is it not already reduced by the influx of legal and illegal immigration endorsed by libertardians?
ReplyDeleteUhh, “This will do nothing but raise prices”.
DeleteAnd who pays for the US to monitor the Mexican companies? And no doubt, the US will end up having Mexican company bailouts. So you read the articles or do your glasses have MAGA written on them that blinds you? And, your on Pelosi’s side on this one, huh?
But according to RW, crony trade deals are always better than no trade deals. Pshhhhh
