U.S. Internship Hiring Cut in Half Since COVID-19 Crisis

Internships often serve as a smooth transition into the workforce for college students — but these openings appear to have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, reports Glassdoor.

The jobs and recruiting site reports that job openings on Glassdoor have dropped to 4.8 million as of April 6, a 20.5 percent decline in openings since March 9.

However, online internship openings on Glassdoor dropped to 30,806 as of April 13, a 52 percent drop since March 9, 2020.

The lockdowns are the great economic destroyer.

  1. It's probably not helped by the complexity of DOL rules around when it's "OK" to take on unpaid interns.

  2. Confirmed: My company was alerted by the U of Iowa business school that many business students had their internships canceled. My company, in turn, is hiring 2-3 as 1) quality students who were hired are now available and 2) the school also pays for >50% of their compensation. We're just a small business with 40 employees, but trying to see opportunities where we can.
