Trump's Cuban Hating Candidate Wins Election to Head Inter-American Development Bank,

Mauricio Claver-Carone
President Donald Trump’s candidate, Mauricio Claver-Carone, has won the election to lead the Inter-American Development Bank. Consider him a total insider crony who knows how to play the game.

In 2016, he was named a member of the Donald Trump transition team. On September 1, 2018, he was appointed as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director of the United States National Security Council's Western Hemisphere Affairs directorate.  He previously was U.S. Representative to the International Monetary Fund and as Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Claver-Carone is an American who was born in Florida and raised in Madrid, Spain. He is known as a hardliner against Cuba and Venezuela.

He has written numerous columns in support of the United States embargo against Cuba.

Claver-Carone will be the first U.S. citizen to lead the IADB.

During the nomination process, Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee that would need to approve a U.S. capital increase for the bank, criticized the nomination of Claver-Carone. Leahy said in June that his presidency could jeopardize U.S. support for the bank and warned that Claver-Carone’s adversarial relationship with the governments of Venezuela and Cuba could polarize the IADB.

In other words, Claver-Carone has priorities that are different from the Democrats--but it is an inter-governmental agency that should be abolished. I doubt he is going to go in that direction.

  1. Certainly the IADB has helped finance corrupt and pernicious governments in Latin America thus keeping them in power for longer than they should.
