The 9 Skills Needed to Become a Super Connector

James Altucher is out with another fascinating piece. This time on how to network.

One of the most interesting people I ever met, I met because he once saw my name in the newspaper. He called me up and offered to take me to lunch. I later learned he knew everyone from Saudi sheiks to the president of the New York Stock Exchange by calling them up and taking them to lunch or being introduced by someone he had called up and taken to lunch.

Altucher's advice is not far from what my friend did. You can read it here.

  1. I would add to that, "give your contacts some space when they need it" and "you cannot force a connection". Like James I arrived at these from understanding my own flaws and comparing them to what actually works. I'll just say, it's a work in progress....

  3. BTW, I think that my last post helps to fill in the (facetious) mental blank that James is having as to why he wrote "Time". You have to give people a little of their own time. You are not the only contact that they have, nor is networking the only thing that they spend their time doing. Some people are more busy than others and people's schedules do not always coincide. Plus, no matter how much you like a person, sometimes too much of them is, well, too much.

  4. @Fetz: you definitely sound like a work in progress! Three consecutive posts... just busting your balls :)

  5. The greatest irony of life is that true irony does not actually exist.
