The Signs of Occupy Washington D.C.

A few hundred people are out at Freedom Plaza in Washington D.C. , many with sleeping bags, who appear ready for a long occupation. There were no police in sight. All appeared very peaceful. A female folk singer was on stage, which brought a type of 1960s peace movement feel to the occupation. Here are a few pictures I snapped of the signs created by the protesters. It's obviously a mixed crowd, with very different messages with regard to what needs to be done in America.

There were many anti-war signs such as this one.

There were signs aimed in protest at the new $5.00 fee instituted by Bank of America.

There were 'End the Fed' type signs.

There were signs created by those who aren't yet aware that the Fed is already part of the government.

Free stuff seemed to be popular, like free healthcare.

And the crowd is definitely aware of the Koch brothers. I spotted a few signs like this one.

  1. I dropped by there as well. In addition to the signs you posted, I also saw "Capitalism is a failure, socialism is the alternative" and a mock Preamble to the Constitution beginning with the words "We the Corporations." And 1960s is spot on, there were tie-dye shirts and singing, and the unpleasant smells of body odor and smoking (not cigarettes).

  2. The Mises Institute should create a little pamphlet to be handed out to set some of these national socialists straight. Title it "The Tao of Dough"; put a long hair hippy-beatnik wig on Bob Murphy and have him hand them out. Then have Bob read part II of Allen Ginsberg's poem Howl in front of the Federal Reserve:

"What sphinx of cement and aluminum bashed open their skulls and ate up their brains and imagination?
Moloch! Solitude! Filth! Ugliness! Ashcans and unobtainable dollars! Children screaming under the stairways! Boys sobbing in armies! Old men weeping in the parks!....."

  3. The Federal Reserve is a private organization masquerading as part of the government.

  4. I am confused by this comment: "There were signs created by those who aren't yet aware that the Fed is already part of the government." Please explain? Is the Fed not a private corporation?

  5. These rioters are the foot soldiers and the shock troops of Obama's re-election bid. The coming riots will be very useful as Obama builds an electoral base on class warfare and hate.

  6. Anonymous @ 1:21, the Federal Reserve is both public and private, it depends upon what aspect of the Fed that you're talking about. The regional banks and all member banks (i.e. the bank down the street) are privately owned. In fact, it is the member banks that each own a single share in the Federal Reserve system. The board of governors for the Fed and the FOMC are government entities. Basically, while the individual banks are privately owned all decisions for policy and operations comes from Washington. The "Bernank" is a government employee, not a private-sector employee (he is legally barred from owning stock in, or having any position it, any private bank or trust.

Essentially, the Fed is a cartelized structure that has both socialist and private property traits; it is a fascistic entity (in my opinion).

  8. @Anon 6:59am

Not all of these folks are losers, maybe not most of them. They are disgruntled and outraged (correctly so), they are just ignorant (like the vast vast majority of Americans) on economic matters.

They are RIGHT to be outraged. They just need to learn economics.
