Tom Palmer's Idea of a "Gleaming Headquarters of the Liberty Movement"

A friend just received an invitation from Cato's Tom Palmer, which begins:
I’m writing in the hope that we can meet this summer, July 29-August 3, in the new and gleaming headquarters of the liberty movement, the Cato Institute, where we’ll be holding Cato University.
Cato University is for people who didn’t stop thinking after they got out of school. It’s for people who don’t want politicians or bureaucrats or officials to do their thinking for them. It’s for people who value liberty. I hope it’s for you. You’ll learn. You’ll be inspired. You’ll make friends. You’ll leave with the tools to change the course of America by limiting government...
Oh puhleeze, from what I hear, multiple female employees have left with settlements, of one kind or another, as a result of sexual advances by a very senior Cato official. It's hard for me to believe Tom that you don't know what is going on behind the scenes.Talking about a brand new "gleaming headquarters" when a horrific scandal is about to shake the DC think tank industry just boggles the mind.

Tom Palmer what we really need from you is an email spilling the beans on what you know about the horrific conduct of you know who, not a drivel about a gleaming building built on money raised by Ed Crane. When the story breaks wide, and the clock is ticking on the story (the delay in the story coming out is that it keeps getting bigger, even in recent weeks!)what email will you send out then?

  1. This better be true...of course I've not heard anything about a libel suit against EPJ, so it must be true.

    1. He's worded everything in such a way that he can't be found guilty of libel even if there's nothing to this. For example, Wenzel says "from what I hear," which distances himself from culpability while still enabling him to communicate what he's trying to get across.

I'm not saying anything either way. On the one hand, nobody's covering this but Wenzel. On the other hand, DC runs on this sort of thing.

  2. Bob, just let them further inflate the bubble/prop the facade.

It will make the takedown even more enjoyable.

  3. New Summer 'Cato Institute'...or MisesU? Hmmm, last gasp perhaps?

  4. Love your site Bob, but "horrific scandal" is a bit of an exaggeration. Nobody died. "Embarrassing scandal" would be more like it. And even though as a Rothbardian type I have many disagreements with Cato, it gives me no pleasure to see them become a laughing stock. They are libertarians and they do plenty of good work....

  5. It is interesting that this year's Cato University is being held at the Institute headquarters. In the past they would hold this event at swanky resorts in Scottsdale, AZ or La Jolla, CA. I don't know when they had to resort to just doing the event at the Cato headquarters, but this is an indication that they do not have the purchasing power that they had in the past.

    1. No, it's an indication that they have a newly renovated building to show off to potential donors.
