Net Takers versus Net Payers of Federal Taxes

Joe Weisenthal has put up a chart showing on a state by state basis, which states receive more in federal tax revenue than they pay in taxes and for which state it is the opposite. Of course, it would prove more interesting to see this on a job by job basis, comparing how many federal government employees, contractors and other beneficiaries  are in each state versus the private sector, but this is a start.

In the map, the states shaded blue pay in more than they get back.  Red states receive more than they pay in federal taxes.

  1. Interestingly enough, it corresponds quite closely to a typical political Red-state/Blue-state map.

    1. The noticeable differences being Texas, Florida, and Hawaii.

    2. The notable exceptions being Texas, Florida, and Hawaii.

  2. ... but still, this is one of those interesting things that raise more questions than answers

  3. Where is the methodology for this? Do they count government jobs as givers or takers? Does this only count military bases and entitlement spending in each state?

    1. My question exactly. What is the methodology.

  4. I wonder how this would change if you take into consideration how much state tax deductions wipe out in federal tax receipts. I bet NY and CA go or get close to red. I'm not sure what this is suppose to prove considering some of the bluest states have the largest income disparity/high GINI which the left supposedly is concerned about (wink, wink). I have seen the left use this as a tool of bigotry, but that's another topic.

    1. Agreed. I would be willing to bet that those blue states would become red if you removed probably 20,000 total taxpayers between all of the states. All this advertises is where the wealthiest people reside to pay taxes.

In other words when Christie is throwing his hissy fit he is really saying: "the rich people in my state pay a lot of taxes, and the poor people were too stupid to prepare for Sandy, so waah waah waah I want some of the rich people's money back to give to the poor so they will elect me again".

  5. I have to imagine that subsidized student loans put a place like MA & CA well into the Red, where many other Red states are more traditional MIC/Pork recipients, or where the Federal Government owns a lot of land that it leases at an insider profit.

  6. The US federal government borrows 40%+ of the money that they "spend". How in the world could every single state not be a red state?

  7. No state, red or blue, receives anywhere close to $1 in real value for every $1 paid in taxes. Most of the money stays in DC, which is why 7 of the 10 richest counties per capita in the country are those surrounding DC. Much of the remaining "value" consists of things that do not actually add value and which no one would pay for in a free economy. For example, Dept. of Education bureaucrats who do nothing but analyze data, write papers only their colleagues will read and place mandates on teachers all across the country are counted as value, yet their actual value is probably negative.

A realistic chart would show all states receiving 10 or 20 cents on the dollar of real value, and much of that would be debatable, with the rest staying in DC.

This is just more divide and conquer, red vs. blue nonsense. The real problem is that little dot on the Potomac they don't want you to pay attention to.

  8. If the finance industry was not in NY to rape, they would not be blue, not by a long shot. NY claims a monopoly on finance and those men pay dearly for the 'pleasure' of being there. Joe wiesenthal is a d-bag and anything he puts out should be taken with a grain of salt. He has an agenda.

  9. Although, poor in taxable income, Louisiana would be one of the richest states in world on par with the Saudis if allowed to keep oil revenues from 12 miles out. This doesn't register on anyone's radar, but the Feds profit from vast resources in flyover land, plundered by corporations headquartered in the "blue" states.
