Wacko Interventionist Idea of the Week: An Email Tax

A Berkeley city councilman has suggested that a tax on emailmay be wise way to help fund the United States Postal Service, according to Berkeleyside.

District 8 Supervisor Gordon Wozniak, who represents an area that includes the eastern end of the UC Berkeley campus, made the comments Tuesday as city officials moved to halt the sale of a Post Office building on Allston Way due to a decline in business.

“There should be something like a bit tax. I mean a bit tax could be a cent per-gigabit and they would still make, probably, billions of dollars a year…And there should be, also, a very tiny tax on email,” Wozniak said at Tuesday’s meeting.

  1. and people laugh when it's suggested they will try to tax the air we breathe one day.

  2. This is why the internet needs a private foundation, not one built from DARPA. Yes, what I'm suggestion is a huge undertaking, but someone with big bucks in the know needs to come out swinging and modify TCP/IP to be government resistant.

  4. In other news, District 8 Supervisor Gordon Wozniak, in a show of good faith has offered to donate all of his earnings, savings, and retirement to fund the new tax. Know as the Wozniak "Ass Hat" email tax, it has garnered wide support by, well, nobody...

When constituents were asked their opinion of his email tax one responded, “There should be something like a politician stupidity tax. I mean a stupidity tax could be a cent per-stupid idea and they would still make, probably, billions of dollars a year… And there should be, also, a very large tax for opening your mouth and revealing what a complete "Ass Hat" your actually are.”

    1. Haha. Great post.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of retarded people in the SF Bay area that might support the tax. Bob Wenzel might be the only one in the area who is against it.

Let the post office collapse. Anyone who wants to enter the business of letter carrying could enter. There is still a market for it, and no doubt competitors could reduce costs dramatically. Lysander Spooner cut postal rates by half, I think.

  5. So, instead of winding down a declining technology, they want to prop it up with newer successful technology. Isn't that like taxing cars to feed horses?

  6. As the Beatles so eloquently put it...

If you drive a car I'll tax the street
If you try to sit I'll tax your seat
If you get too cold I'll tax the heat
If you take a walk I'll tax your feet

  7. clearly an idea coming out of someone's mouth who's never worked in the business world, I receive hundreds of emails a day. Although this tax would make me reconsider sending all those pictures of kitties.
