First, let me start out with a bit of braggadocio. I must be one of the few people, still living, who has actually shaken hands with Ludwig von Mises.
An EPJ reader emails:
I also shook von Mises' hand, probably a few times, as a guest at "Friends of Mises Circle" which met in the evenings at NYU in the 1960s.
I was about 20 years old, & privileged to have been invited as a guest.
Ludwig was in his late 80s. He died a few years later, 1973, and I attended the services, also in NYC.
I have attended 3 funeral services of personal heroes: Ludwig von Mises, Ayn Rand, Robert Atkins.
Sadly, today there are not any even semi-public figures whom I would come close to motivating me to attend their services.
Well, that's not 100% true. Although since we've moved to Florida, I may not keep my word: I promised myself to dance on Alan Greenspan's grave! But it has been a long wait.
This is very funny! And how so lucky to not only know Mises, but be big enough to admire Rand too.
