As a former resident of Daytona, I'd like to point out a few things about the city. First, it's a great place to live if you're into surfing. Ponce Inlet / New Smyrna Beach has the best break in Florida and one of the best on the east coast. Water temps are manageable and you can drive on the beach. The fishing is pretty good as well.
ReplyDeleteA positive for some and a negative for others, the town is riddled with NASCAR fans. Races occur a few times per year at the Daytona International Speedway. Traffic becomes absurd.
Motorcycle enthusiasts, aka bikers, also flock to the area twice a year during Bike Week and Biketoberfest. I found this to be incredibly annoying as bikers hold the phrase as their mantra "Loud Pipes Save Lives." Sure they do. They also annoy the hell out of the elderly and scare small children.
On the negative side is the large amount of drug users that riddle the beachside area, along with numerous tourist shops and trinket stores. Nor can I forget to mention Spring Break (a monthlong party for college students) and Black College Reunion.
There are nice areas around Daytona that might be worth looking into. Ormond Beach to the north and Port Orange to the South. Both these towns are far enough from the aforementioned events but may still be relatively cheap for retirement.
And the reason they are so inexpensive? [Drumroll]
