While Walter Block is a fan (See:
A Fan Letter from Walter Block) of my writing in general and my post,
About My Racist Friends, My Homophobic Friends and My Own Prejudices, this guy, whom I have never heard of before, has a different take:
This is such a shitty article @lewrockwell: http://t.co/tpMT28sirb Why run it? I've sent you a handful of infinitely more thoughtful pieces.

@lewrockwell You'd benefit a great deal by dropping the @WenzelEconomics reprints. They dumb down the site.

I'll go one further: I'm not a fan of politically motivated neologisms like "homophobe," which literally means "fear of the same." What the hell does that have to do with preferring not to associate with homosexuals, especially of the obnoxiously aggressive variety?
ReplyDeleteAre you a total idiot? You are attempting to introduce into the conversation a definition that has zero to do with the sense in which Wenzel is using the term.
DeleteFrom the Merriam Webster dictionary:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/homophobe
homophobe: a person who hates or is afraid of homosexuals or treats them badly
"homophobe: a person who hates or is afraid of homosexuals or treats them badly"
DeleteI don't particularly want to associate with homosexuals so I would be labeled a homophobe. Yet I don't hate them or want to hurt them and I certainly am not afraid of them. That is the OPs point. Sounds like you are pretty angry about it though. Don't let others control you.
I'm talking about the actual literal roots of this political neologism. I generally get what the politically motivated people who invented/use this term mean by it (I'm not talking about Wenzel, who is simply repeating it). It functions pretty much the same way "anti-Semite" is thrown about: as a term of derision to shut down any opinion that isn't "correct" as defined by the thought commissars. As the commenter above noted, one need neither "hate" nor "be afraid of" homosexuals to simply prefer not to associate with them.
DeleteSo no, I'm not a total idiot, but you sound like you could learn a thing or two before shooting your mouth off.
I'm gay, but don't like most homos. What am I, chopped liver?
ReplyDeleteNah, you're just like one of those chicks that "doesn't get along" with other chicks.(and I don't mean you're feminine, just sayin')
DeleteDifferent people, different strokes-no big deal. As long as everyone sticks to the NAP everything should be cool.
Okay, who's volunteering to find his infinitely more thoughtful pieces?
ReplyDeleteCould it be that they didn't get run? Lew must be discriminating against him.
DeleteThis Chad Nelson guy has no people skills. What are the chances of LR running his writing now?
