Jerry Wolfgang Watch Out

I have been somewhat irregular on putting out The Robert Wenzel Show, this is partly because I have set a rule for myself that I must read any book I am interviewing a guest about, when the guest comes on to specifically promote a book and I just don't have the time to read books that I may be only mildly interested in. Secondly, there are only just so many people that I find otherwise interesting enough to interview.

So I have hit on a solution: Comments on Comments. On weeks I don't have a special guest, I am going to pull comments from various posts that I would like to comment further on and cover them on RWS.

Chris Rossini and I will pull what we think are comments that need to be highlighted, defended or attacked and Chris will put the comments to me for a response.

Watchout Jerry Wolfgang.

Note: I am calling it Comment on Comments but feel free to email me any questions that you would like me to cover on RWS. Please also be sure to a tell me in your email if it is okay to use your name when discussing your email question. I won't be able to respond to every question on the show, but Chris and I will attempt to get a good cross-section of the questions that are on your mind.

  1. Why not have JW on as a guest?

    1. As long as he can keep up the troll act on-air, this would be a great idea.

    1. Since you NEVER do this with your posts, I can't wait to see (or better yet hear) you defend your hairbrained notions: debt is an asset, suppliers of medical services dictate demand, inflation creates prosperity, etc.

  3. Discuss Wolfgang? Why? I have been so disappointed in his posts, that I have thought about playing devil's advocate. Thomas Aquinas taught us to always present the strongest opposing argument, JW doesn't cut it.

    1. This is why having him on as a guest is a good idea. He would have to defend his positions. If he declines the invitation then he demonstrates he has no positions to defend.

    2. Josiah, sophomoric though his posts are, Jerry presents views that are all too common among the half educated holders of overpriced liberal arts degrees. Rather than debating a worthy adversary, I view the approach Robert outlines here as one of smashing fallacies and correcting basic errors.

I've commented before my belief that allowing Wolfgang to go unanswered gives less seasoned readers the impression that he has somehow won the debate. And although I too responded to Robert's initial post that JW should be banned, upon further consideration I have found his reasons for allowing JW to keep posting to be compelling, and I've come around to embrace his view wholeheartedly.

And this new approach is a master stroke. Now JW will be forced to defend his bizarre assertions--something he never does--and if he doesn't, it will be glaringly obvious to even the casual reader that he lacks the courage or intellectual honesty to support his convictions.

    3. No kidding. They're so bad in fact that it's almost a parody which is why he's useless. They're not even challenging in the least. It's a like a bad joke or, as I've said many times, he's just a troll.

    1. He doesn't deserve anything beyond "ad hominem" dumb ass. He's nothing but an internet troll.

  5. I posted the "let's not sink to the PC left" comment on the last Peter Schiff post (yesterday). It was not a defense of JW, but an admonition of the commenters' reactions to Jerry. I think Jerry is smart, but misguided. Again, I implore commenters to not treat Jerry as leftists treat Libertarians, conservatives, etc (I KNOW the differences between the two and I am not equating them. I am merely pointing out how leftists treat small/ limited/ no governments positions). I will take your heat by at least not going anonymous. You can address me with all of your disdain!

    1. You'll get no disdain from me, SM. Like you I believe we should treat those with whom we disagree better than they treat us. I try to reserve my pejorative adjectives for JW's opinions, rather than the person himself.

He does make it difficult though, through his reliance on argument by gross mischaracterization, willful omission, cherry picking of data, the occasional straw man and ad hominem, and--most especially--never returning to rebut further commentary or defend his assertions.

Smart he may indeed be, but by all appearances it's an undergraduate coursework sort of smart. By the content of his posts he demonstrates that he lacks the experience and understanding to engage his opponents in meaningful debate. Which is why the format proposed in Robert's post here is a great opportunity for both the EPJ readership, and for Jerry himself.
