US Pays Half of Ukraine's Two Billion Dollar Debt Owed to Russia's Gazprom

ZeroHedge explains:
With Ukraine no longer paying for Russian gaz, and with Gazprom making it clear Kiev has to a) first pay the overdue $2+ billion in invoice and then b) prepay some $5 billion in gas until the end of the year of Europe gets it, it was only a matter of time before the US Treasury stepped in and paid off part or all of Gazprom's demands. That time is now, when moments ago Jack Lew announced a $1 billion loan guarantee for Ukraine - very much the same way that the US provided billions in loan guarantees for the now long overthrown Mursi regime in Egypt.
OAO Gazprom is the largest extractor of natural gas and one of the largest companies in the world. Its name is a contraction of the Russian words Gazovaya Promyshlennost (Газовая промышленность), meaning "gas industry".

The major part of Gazprom's production fields are located around the Gulf of Ob in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in Western Siberia, while the Yamal Peninsula is expected to become the company's main gas producing region in the future. Gazprom possesses the largest gas transport system in the world, with approximately 158,200 kilometres of gas trunk lines.

It should be noted that while Russian President Putin allows pretty much free market operations in most sectors. He considers the energy sector his personal domain. According to the Guardian, Putin own 4.5% of Gazprom. So in a way, with the guarantee, the U.S. just put $45 million into Putin's personal pocket.

    2. I agree, but no great achievement, as Obama is only a hand puppet for the Neocons. His main talent being he can read well from a teleprompter. I think that Putin can make him look stupid with no real effort.

    3. If he was a good "commodity" trader, he would have asked to pay in valuable commodities for his commodity. I am talking about gold. In other wards he could have asked the US to pay with looted Ukrainian gold.

  2. Oh good. I was wondering what we'd do with all that extra money! I was afraid we'd start paying off our grandchildrens' debt. I didn't even THINK of giving it to the most aggressive enemy we have! Good job Obama!

    2. You most aggressive enemy sits in Westminster Palace. Read "The Committee of 300" by John L. Coleman to find out who your enemy is. Gazprom is not printing your currency last time I checked, is it?

  3. @Anonymous. The "most aggressive enemy" you have is in Washington, - not in Russia! It's time to get a clue.

  5. I am a senior on S.S. and I'm struggling to come up with simple back taxes. I had to cover MY high gas bill, while Texans are blowing up from so much natural gas in the ground. I live in Michigan and they found a well that would supply the world for 20 years, but my gas bill didn't go down!

  6. "According to the Guardian, Putin own 4.5% of Gazprom."

Why we would trust anything by The Guardian which regularly shills for the British and US governments, and in particular by Luke Harding who is a sloppy and lazy reporter with a history of plagiarism and whose article was linked to this post, I'll never understand.

And even if Putin did own 4.5% of Gazprom, that leaves 95.5% to be owned by other people.

  8. I do not know what are the interests to make these payments and the issue is just to capture the Ukraine either Russia or the Europe but if Obama has paid the money for the Ukraine's debt for just hope it will be great because the people only want to have their independence not the politics. Obama is good in making strong financial decisions that is the reason he did it like this and I am sure it will be good for the both sides. click here to read more
