SHOCK: Catholic Teachers Required to Act Like Catholics

The usual busibodies, government interventionists and egalitarians are out trying to stop a private organization, the Catholic Diocese of Oakland, from setting the terms for those they want to hire.

San Francisco's KRON 4 reports:
Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner and families of the Diocese of Oakland schools are reacting to news on Friday that teachers are being required to behave in conformity with the teaching of the Roman Catholic faith in their personal lives.
Skinner (D-Berkeley), a Catholic and the mother of a gay daughter, said at a news conference in Oakland, that she believes that section in the contract is “a morality pledge” and she is concerned that “you could be fired if you join a rally for gay marriage.”
The contract says, “In both the EMPLOYEE’S personal and professional life, the EMPLOYEE is expected to model and promote behavior in conformity with the teaching of the Roman Catholic faith in matters of faith and morals, and do nothing that tends to discredit to the school or to the Diocese of Oakland.”...
Cathy Hoehn, a parent at Bishop O’Dowd High School, says there should be regulations governing teacher misconduct but that they shouldn’t be forced to follow Catholic principles.
“The Diocese should not have a say on what teachers do in their personal lives outside of school and what they’re allowed to talk to their children about,” Hoehn said....
Skinner said the contract for teachers in the Diocese of Oakland schools in Alameda and Contra Costa County counties uses “Inquisition-style and McCarthyism-style tactics” that raise fears that teachers could be fired for being gay, for having premarital sex or for using birth control.
Among those who joined Skinner at a news conference outside the state building in Oakland to express their opposition to the new contract were Port of Oakland Commissioner Michael Colbruno, Berkeley City Councilman Darryl Moore, Alameda County Board of Education Member Joaquin Rivera and Berkeley school board members Judy Appel and Beatriz Leyva-Cutler.
A politician charging a private organization with using  “Inquisition-style and McCarthyism-style tactics,” yeah right. You can walk away from any private organization you like, but if the government pokes into any part of a person's life, the walk away option is always removed from the table.

  1. Amazing! Why don't all teachers just get jobs in public schools if catholic school employment is so oppressive and further what does she think about random drug testing? How is that not intrusive? Most of my kids have had to submit to random drug testing in the private sector. Where was she on that issue?

  2. I don't like the Catholic Church but the government has no damned business sticking it's totalitarian nose in their face. These politicians are such hypocritical parasites!

  3. So this Catholic school is deliberately hitting back at Mozilla?
