Senators Propose Massive Gasoline Tax Increase

Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) and Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) on Wednesday unveiled the first bipartisan Senate proposal to raise the gasoline tax, reports The Hill.

The Murphy-Corker plan would raise the gas tax by 12 cents a gallon over the next two years. The federal gas tax currently stands at 18.4 cents a gallon, where it has been set since 1993. The proposed increase would see the tax jump by 65%.

Further, it would index the gas tax to inflation, pegging it to the Consumer Price Index.

Get a load if this (via The Hill):
Corker said he avoids violating Americans for Tax Reform’s Taxpayer Protection Pledge by pairing the gas tax hike with other tax-relief legislation, such as a proposal to renew certain expired tax provisions indefinitely.

Ah, don't you just love it when in this era of partisan bickering and hair-pulling, there can be little moments of true bipartisan cooperation to screw us all pretty?

  2. A double-whammy! Indexing it to the CPI, so a tax on a tax! Can't wait!

  3. The gas excise was supposed to expire after the highways were completed in the 80s. Thanks to the "free market" Reagan administration, it's still plaguing us today.

For all the talk we hear of "fair" and "more progressive" taxes, those that are most damaging to people at the bottom of the economic ladder seem to just become more damaging as time goes on.

    Cue the classic saying:

The US has a two party system - the stupid party, and the evil party. Sometimes, they do something that's both stupid and evil. That's called bipartisanship.

  4. How about eliminating the gas tax, federal transportation funding for highways, the DOT and the NHSB? Yeah, right.
