What Are the College Degrees That Are Worth More Than Decades of Job Experience

Freshly minted college graduates who majored in fields like architecture, business, computers, statistics, engineering and health can expect to start jobs where they earn more than high school graduates with decades of experience.

That’s the finding of a new report from Georgetown University‘s Center on Education and the Workforce, reports WSJ.

Further, unemployment rates for new graduates in architecture, agriculture and natural resources, and engineering and physical sciences have been falling. Unemployment for new grads in psychology and social work and for communications and journalism have continued to rise even as the national unemployment rate improved.

  1. Kind of misleading comparing someone with no experience to someone with decades of experience. Looks like any diploma will put you several years ahead of of your HS diploma only peers, not to mention greatly increase your earning potential when you become experienced.

    1. Not really. The point is, the earning potential is at point.

While a technician with ten year's experience and no diploma might get paid more than a graduate engineer, eventually, and likely after the engineer gets his license, he'll easily surpass the technician and there's no way the technician will surpass the engineer after that.

  2. Interesting, though the Law and Public Policy numbers seem incredibly low, given what the lawyers I know make.

    1. Not really, there's an enormous surplus in the supply of graduate lawyers these days. Also, the days of making partner after 3-5 years are long gone. There are plenty of attorneys working for firms that will never get into the management/ownership layer at that firm.
