More Economic Ignorance From Trump

In a  speech this morning in the White House's Roosevelt Room, President Trump endorsed a bill aimed at reforming the U.S. immigration system by scaling back the number of immigrants entering the country, reports CBS.

The Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment (RAISE) bill, introduced by neocon Sens. Tom Cotton, R-Arkansas, and David Perdue, R-Georgia, establishes a "points-based system for acquiring a green card," according to Trump, while also preventing immigrants from collecting welfare.

"The RAISE Act will reduce poverty, increase wages and save taxpayers billions and billions of dollars," Trump said.

The bill aims to alter the U.S. immigration system to favor immigrants who speak English, have financial stability and demonstrate useful skills.

"This legislation demonstrates our passion for struggling American families," Mr. Trump said, adding that the change in immigration policy "puts America first."

The president asserted that the current immigration system "has not been fair to our people, to our citizens, to our workers."

I am glad to see the call for a Welfare Wall, which I have long advocated. But the idea that Trump knows better than free markets what type of skills are needed in this country from immigrants is the height of economic central planning ignorance.

Maybe what we need are more immigrant grounds keepers and building cleaners, or maybe Trump plans to wash his own windows at Trump Tower after he leaves the White House.

Every politician that claima a piece of legislation is going to "reduce poverty", one can safely assume the politician is a demagogue.

But when El SeƱor Presidente Bananero Trumpo says it, you KNOW he is making that claim out of sheer ignorance, because he has show a ridiculous lack of knowledge of even the most basic economics.

Guy Benson said something I many times repeated, that support for this awful restriction on legal immigration obviates any claim from Republicans that they want legal immigration. Clearly, they only want HALF of it.

  2. Unemployment is in the double digits. Anything to reduce legal and illegal immigration is a great thing. I'm one of those unemployed 'skilled' Americans that corporate America simply can't seem to find the need to hire. But why should they when Ranjeev and Lo Wei will supposedly do it for cheaper but not necessarily better? Plus it helps with the 'duh-versity' angle.

People from non-Western societies have no place here. Somalis should go. Most Indians to. Deporting a couple million greencard and H-1's would be a good start.

If more legal immigration is good, maybe they could go to Mexico? I would love to see Mexico absorb a few million Africans for example.

    1. Who is stopping you from under-bidding them? Or stopping you from offering greater value at the same price? Or stopping you from adapting to the market? Or stopping you from creating a consulting service and/or outside testing lab? But by all means, use the goons with guns, to keep property owners and voluntary tramsactions from operating freely.

    2. Re: Bradley,

What's stopping him is the time he spends wondering of how come US business cannot come to their senses and realize what a wonderful and amazing employee he could be and at the price range HE wants to command. He must repeat that to himself every time he looks in the mirror. You know, like Stuart Smalley.

─ If more legal immigration is good, maybe they could go to Mexico? ─

Many are already going to Mexico. And yes, immigration is good. It means increasing the availability of labor, which increases Division of Labor and Specialization.

The economically-ignorant Trumpistas tend to think of the economy as a fixed pie, just like their Marxian brethren.

─ I would love to see Mexico absorb a few million Africans for example. ─

Who is absorbing a "few million Africans"? And what is so special about Africans (Africa being a whole gawd-damned continent and not a country) that you would show such a disdain for them?

    4. @The Lab Manager,

Maybe the reason that you're unemployed has nothing to do with immigrants takin' ur jeb, but rather that your unapologetic ignorance and bigotry make you a liability in the workplace.

  3. Good for Trump !

This is not a free market right now.
    Immigrants get heavy government subsidies.

One would think from all the squealing by Libertarians about immigration we live in a crime free nation with no debt.

      Liar.

Immigration does not exacerbate neither. And being crime-free is an impossible expectation and a dishonest prerequisite, like asking for perfect and virtuous people in order to have a free market. That's how Marxians tend to argue, which only serves to validate my suspicion that Trumpistas are Marxians in "conservative" drag.

    2. Yes, we all know that Mexico is both crime free and prosperous despite being full of Mexicans.
