Block-Wenzel Debate

I have put a notice up at Target Liberty on the debate I am having against Walter Block on Saturday in San Francisco.

In case some of you have missed it, the details are here:

The Block-Wenzel debate "Resolved: Humans Are Hardwired Against Freedom" will take place at the Chancellor Hotel at 433 Powell St. in the heart of the San Francisco shopping and dining district.
I think we could make some breakthroughs in thought about advancing libertarianism at this event.
The debate will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2019, from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. There is no charge to attend the event but you must register at
I hope to see many of you.

The debate will also be recorded and posted on Sunday morning at

  1. Here are some talking points you might want to address RW.

  2. If humans are hardwired then advocating for freedom is either completely futile, if we were created as we are, or if caused by evolution a very long game. But if humans are hardwired who are we freedom loving EPJ/TL readers, the mutants or a different species?

I’m sure that Block and Wenzel will make this an interesting debate. IMO the resolution is impossible. The old nature or nurture components are a big part of the debate. To the best of human knowledge nature and nurture are inseparable.

I would have to go full transcendental to explain but believe that humans (even us homo-libertatem) are essentially hardwired for freedom and the non-freedom part of us is socially constructed and seen as a necessary structure originally for survival and now (however erroneous) to prosper.

Block should win because of how most people will define humans and hardwired. Our most accepted understanding of the animal we call homo-sapien has us from conception completely dependent on other humans for survival and fully developed humans dependent on their environment. Because of these dependencies we do not consider ourselves free. This lack of physical freedom affects our ability to conceptualize ourselves as free in other aspects of existence. Which is understandable. As with nature and nurture, our physical nature is inseparable (for all but possibly those that may have obtained “enlightenment”) from any other nature we may have.

  3. I'm assuming/hoping this will be recorded and made available online.
