White House Considering Vehicle Mileage Tax

Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, said this morning on CNBC that the White House is weighing a mileage tax and special bonds to fund infrastructure.

He spoke specifically of a mileage levy, which would tax travelers based on how far they travel instead of on how much gasoline they consume.

“I’m hearing a lot of appetite to make sure that there are sustainable funding streams,” the transportation secretary said. A mileage tax “shows a lot of promise if we believe in that so-called user-pays principle: The idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive.”

Crony Joe Biden's puppetmasters are preparing detailed sweeping infrastructure proposals that could cost $3 trillion to $4 trillion.Biden will announce the details during a trip to Pittsburgh next week.

It is really time to take the advice of Dr. Walter Block and privatize the roads and highways (see: Privatization Of Roads And Highways: Human And Economic Factors).

  1. Outside of the obvious implications of such a tax (they want you out of your private vehicle), I'm wondering if Joe will remember he's going to Pittsburg next week?

  2. Great, another way for government to track our movements and know (generally) where we are and when.

  3. They have a way out of that corner. In Illinois, vehicle registration for electric/hybrid cars is more expensive than fossil fuel vehicles. Justification is that the state needs to charge electric/hybrid cars for the lost gas tax revenue.

  5. "user-pays principle"? I do very little driving on Federal highways. Most of my driving is on private roads, city streets and county roads. Yet, Federal taxes will be added to my fuel cost? How does that work?
