Rand Paul's Strange Advice to Med Students

The National Journal reports:
Rand Paul was talking with University of Louisville medical students when one of them tossed him a softball. "The majority of med students here today have a comprehensive exam tomorrow. I'm just wondering if you have any last-minute advice."(Steve Brodner)

"Actually, I do," said the ophthalmologist-turned-senator, who stays sharp (and keeps his license) by doing pro bono eye surgeries during congressional breaks. "I never, ever cheated. I don't condone cheating. But I would sometimes spread misinformation. This is a great tactic. Misinformation can be very important."

He went on to describe studying for a pathology test with friends in the library. "We spread the rumor that we knew what was on the test and it was definitely going to be all about the liver," he said. "We tried to trick all of our competing students into over-studying for the liver" and not studying much else.

"So, that's my advice," he concluded. "Misinformation works."
But then NJ asks a very important question:
Paul's little riff had the students laughing hard. And it was amusing—but also amazing. Why would he set himself up with an anecdote like that? He knew reporters were in the lecture hall. He's also well aware that watch- dogs are compiling a growing file of evidence that he plays loose with the facts.

  2. He doesn't condone cheating only because it is hard to get away with and the consequences for getting caught are steep. Otherwise, he would be all for it. So when diehard supporters were telling us that Rand was just playing the game, they were right. They just didn't know which game. Or who exactly was being played.

  4. Nice find. More Rand Paul practicing Gonzo politics. Hunter Thompson would have caught notice.

  5. Clearly Rand is just itching to get on EPJ some more. Too easy.

  6. Wow. That reminds me of Arnold Schwartzenegger confessing in a film I believe was called 'Pumping Iron' that he used to 'help' younger competitors by telling them exactly the wrong thing to do. He 'confessed' it while laughing. I took it to be the sign of a sociopath, non-repentant.

  7. Rand didn't tell these "doctors" to go be Pharma/Gov Grant stooges did he? He belittled the profession and its licensing schemes. Or do some still believe in "doctors"?

  8. Sociopaths are the scariest kind of doctors. I definitely knew the type. The kids that believed the misinformation were also scary. You want the honest doctor who kept their nose in a book and just learned medicine!

  9. He's mistaken when he says this is not cheating. Lying about knowing what is on the test is cheating. Rand Paul cheated to get through med school.

    2. Are you paid by Rand?
Seriously, you seem like an unthinking drone with that phrase.

    4. He was being sarcastic.... was it a dumb thing ot say in retrospect... yes.. because idiots will use it as gospel against him....

    5. Lying about what is on a test is not cheating. It is about catching those who want to cheat. Cheating would be ACTUALLY knowing what was going to be on a test in advance of it.

  10. So Rand doesn't condone cheating but lying to groups of people is just fine! Apparently he ultimately chose the right profession!

    3. 9:53, Was he lying when he endorsed Mitch McC? Or was that said in jest? Feel free to support his play in this game. Just don't delude yourself into thinking that it isn't lying.

    4. There is nothing wrong with lying to those who wish to cheat, steal or otherwise commit a criminal act. After all, if he *did* know what was on the test in advance of the test -- THAT would be cheating.

  11. A requisite trait, and held in spades, by any politician........need we say more?

  12. No no... The misinformation is not for those who believe Rand Paul is the exception to millennia of politicians who lie to those believing their rhetoric.
The misinformation is for the neocons who think he is a team player. Get it? He needs to "play the game".
Rand Paul is a genius who will make people think with misinformation that he is a real Republican, but will then turn into the REAL Rand: the libertarian who will be our savior once in the white house.
That's how it is, because it HAS to be. It just has to.
Rand Paul 2016!!! Rand Paul 2016!!!

  13. He's a total fraud. He couldn't pass the boards so he created his own fake board with a POBox and "certification". People who can't pass the exams blame the "regulations". So he lies about being board certified, and he tricks patients into trusting his skill. If you like him so much, you should have operate on your cataracts. Let us know how that goes. http://www.salon.com/2010/06/14/rand_2/
